a childhood memory...moses in the desert!

i remember growing up as a young sixers fan. in the early '80s the 76ers were a highly competitive team. but unfortunately they were never able to get to the "promised land". they were always close. a loss to the Celtics in the eastern conference finals or a loss to the Lakers in the nba finals kept the title out of reach. it was a troubling time because we didn't win but the sixers were successful.  the sixers were then sent a "savior". the savior wore the number 2. he led the 76ers to the nba championship. he was the missing piece for doctor j, maurice cheeks, andrew toney, and bobby jones. he was moses malone.

moses malone came to the 76ers in 1982. he originally signed with the sixers as a free agent but because of free agent rules eventually a trade was worked out between the 76ers and houston Rockets that sent malone to the 76ers. he had been very successful in his previous stops. he had come from high school straight to the aba. he eventually landed on the rockets as the aba dispersed.  a powerful inside force who could dominate offensively. a powerful scorer and rebounder. he won several mvp awards and rebounding titles. but the most memorable thing he did was when he uttered his most famous quote. during the '83 playoffs moses told the press that the team wanted to go, "fo,fo,fo!" sweeping each series. but unfortunately we could only go, "fo,five, fo"! it will never be forgotten.

it was after that season that moses malone led the 76ers to the "promised land" that a poster was made of moses malone in uniform with a giant staff in one hand standing in the desert basketballs were scattered around him. there were other good posters at the time- george gervin sitting in an ice chair is one that comes to mind. but moses malone in the desert was by far the best!
