Harper blows a kiss to opposing pitcher

Last year at this time, the Nationals made Bryce Harper the No. 1 overall pick. There was no question he was the top talent available, but there was question about his mental makeup. Or, in other words, people said he was a jerk.

Well, the day before the anniversary of his being drafted, Harper showed exactly why he got labeled as such a jerk, and this time cameras from CSNWashington.com were there to catch it.

Check out this video:

I thought his trot was bad enough -- as apparently did pitcher Zachary Neal, who glared at him as he went around the bases -- before he blew Neal a kiss before crossing home plate. He continued talking as he made his way toward the dugout.

Neal wasn't pitching when Harper came up in eighth -- Michael Ojala was on the mound for Greensboro -- but the Grasshoppers were holding a 3-2 lead, so Harper didn't get drilled. But I don't think anyone would be surprised if Harper finds a baseball between his shoulder blades tonight when the two teams meet again.

when he gets up to the majors he will learn real quick when he gets drilled between the eyeballs by a 95 mph heater to quit blowing kisses!

Harper blows a kiss to opposing pitcher

Overreact much? There are plenty of jerks in this thread and none of them are named Harper. People are wishing knee injuries and bean balls to the head for an 18 year old kid who made a silly gesture. A gesture that may have been provoked for all we know. Similar to this thread, there is a lot of jealously on the diamond towards this kid, because of his talent and the attention he receives. It doesnt bother me that Harper has a bit of a personality. It doesnt bother me that he pushed the envelope a bit. This might constitute a problem if it continues but I would assume its an isolated incident. Its baseball and its supposed to be fun. Lighten up. People are mad that an 18 year old who should be a senior in high school is ripping up the minors, is good and he knows it. Bottom line if the pitcher didnt like the celebration, he should have made sure he didnt get taken deep.
Apologist much?  Who wished injury on him?  I know my post said I wouldn't shed a tear of it occured, but I certainly didn't wish it upon teh child.  Some people read about as well as this kid handles success with grace.  Since however you are new to baseball I will explain that when batters show up pitchers, especially to the degree this chump did, it is traditional to teach the child some respect, hence the prediction that he will get beaned.  Again, a prediction is not the same as a wish (get a dictionary if you must).  You know what else has no place in baseball?  Self-serving holier-than-thou attitudes.  I think we should have all expected encouraging childish behavior from a self-proclaimed king.

I think the interview with Mike Schmidt was dead-on, where Schmidt said actions like Harper's lead to bench-clearing brawls and have no place in the game.  So to not condem Harper, again as knowlegable fans know, is to promorte bencg clearing brawls.  NASCAR or wrestling might be more your style.  What gesture by the pitcher made him admire his shot for a half an hour?  Please explain.

The epitome of stupidity would be to link a love of respect and maturity to some perceived jealousy of talent.  That sounds like something Finnegan in the NFL would say.  I'm certainly not jealous of his talent, but I do intensly dislike spoiled rotten brats who wouldn't accountability if it grew awfuls fuzz on his face.  This boy would be well-served to work on his swiss-cheese defense rather than his home run promenade.

Bottom line is some people excuse awful behavior for selkf-serving interests.  Does anyone notice how the critiscism of this kid is universal except for one city - Washington.  We all know what that city of liars thinks of respect, integrity, and accountability.

Drilling Harper won't do any good in curtailing this behavior. When I played, you didn't throw at the guy who showed you up, you threw at the guy up next. Drill that guy once or twice someplace where it hurts (elbow, ribs, knee) and he and his teammates will take care of the showoff back in the locker room...nobody is willing to get drilled for somebody else acting like an idiot.

THAT IS WEAK!! I DONT KNOW THIS KID, BUT IT SEEMS WHAT EVERYBODY SAYS & WRITES ABOUT HIM IS TRUE BECAUSE THAT IS A BUSH LEAGUE MOVE AND IF THEY DONT DRILL HIM TONIGHT. THEN I DONT BELIEVE IN THE SO CALLED "UNWRITTEN RULES" BECAUSE THAT KISS HAS TO BREAK A COUPLE OF THEM. AND THE BEST PART OF THE VIDEO WHAT IS UP WITH THAT 1970 PORN MUSTACHE. I MEAN HE SHOULD CATCH A BEATING FROM HIS OWN TEAM FOR RUNNING AROUND WITH THAT FERRAT ABOVE HIS LIP. WHOEVER TOLD HIM THAT LOOKED GOOD NEEDS TO BE TESTED FOR NARCOTICS. I CANT WAIT TO SEE IF ANYTHING HAPPENS IN THE GAME TONIGHT

Off base with post...The pitcher was yapping at Harper while he was rounding the bases so Harper simply blew him a kiss for the present he'd just received. I have watched MLB players for years admire their HR's just like that. I am not saying I agree with it but no difference then a pitcher fist pumping after striking a batter out to end the inning.

I will bet my left one that the benches clear when these two teams play tonight. That's Bush league right there, when I pitched I would have chased that boy down after he blew that kiss and beat the snot out of him. This is a prime example of why the Nationals are keeping this kid in the minors this year because he continues to show he still needs a baby sitter.

Wow, I wouldn't shed a tear if this little boy blew out a knee or two.  What is up with that scumstache?  He should be beaned on general principle for looking like that.  He must not like the ladies, which is his choice of course.  Without a doubt he will find himself on his back with his ears ringing from a high heater.  I see some revisionists posting that the pitcher did something to some how makle this little boy a scumbag, but of course there is no evidence at all in  the video that anyone did anything trashy except Mr. Trash Harper.  He admired a minor-league homer?  I guess when I smack a wiffel ball over the neighbor's fence I should prance like a skunk in heat as well.  This guy would get along great with Burrows the Biter in hockey.  He reminds me of a cross between Milton Bradley and David Cross.
