Last year at this time, the Nationals made Bryce Harper the No. 1 overall pick. There was no question he was the top talent available, but there was question about his mental makeup. Or, in other words, people said he was a jerk.

Well, the day before the anniversary of his being drafted, Harper showed exactly why he got labeled as such a jerk, and this time cameras from were there to catch it.

Check out this video:

I thought his trot was bad enough -- as apparently did pitcher Zachary Neal, who glared at him as he went around the bases -- before he blew Neal a kiss before crossing home plate. He continued talking as he made his way toward the dugout.

Neal wasn't pitching when Harper came up in eighth -- Michael Ojala was on the mound for Greensboro -- but the Grasshoppers were holding a 3-2 lead, so Harper didn't get drilled. But I don't think anyone would be surprised if Harper finds a baseball between his shoulder blades tonight when the two teams meet again.

Harper blows a kiss to opposing pitcher

"To call Harper a jerk is bad journalism"...Why?  Cause it's true?  First off, he admired a homerun...Very disrespectful in the game of baseball.  Number two...He showed how much of a wimp he is because he waited to act out till he got near his teammates cause he knew he would get his butt handed to him otherwise...then he ran his mouth when he was encircled by his teammates...Not only is he a jerk, but also a coward!

If I was that catcher, I would have caught up with him in the parking lot and ripped that Charlie the Chi-Mo Moustache right off his face!  The kid is letting the stardom get to his head...Which tells me that HOPEFULLY, he wont last long if and when he gets to the bigs.

Harper blows a kiss to opposing pitcher

From watching the video, it looks to me as though the pitcher walked towards Harper and maybe inititiated the incident (kiss blowing). Hard to tell.  I didn't care for Harper standing in the box after the HR and watching it go, but that seems to be the standard these days.  Ever watch Ryan Howard (Phil's) hit a home run. What a hot dog.  It's also sickening the way he saunters up to the plate.  Like his %^&$ doesn't stink.  Talk about slowing the game down. When baseball was really baseball, behavior like that would get you a 90mph fastball in the middle of the back, or worse, right in the head.  Alot of todays players are arrogant showmen, who care more about money and looking good than they do about winning.

Harper blows a kiss to opposing pitcher

It seems obvious what happened is that Harper admired his shot for a little too long, the pitcher started yapping to him about it, and Harper blew him a kiss in return.  To call Harper a jerk for this is bad journalism.  I'd like to know why he was considered a jerk before this incident, or if it was just a label this reporter slapped on him.  Welcome to the media spotlight Bryce.  While some of the media love to watch you climb to the top, just as many would love to pull you back down to the ground.

Wow, he's a jerk for that?  I did 5 things more smarts$$ then that before lunch today, I hope the author never meets me, he'll really hate me.  I like how there's no mention of the pitcher being a jerk, as it looks like he's the one doing all the running his mouth. I guess you'd rather Bryce cause a bench clearing brawl, buy getting mouthy right back and taking it all serious, as opposed to making a joke of the pitcher being all pissed off?  I think him blowing off the situation shows a lot of maturity.  Nyjer Morgan could learn a lot from this 18 year old.

Sure it's not the most ideal thing to do but it's no less insulting than what we see on Sportscenter every night and what's been celebrated for YEARS - that being athletes showboating.
Harper grew up in that Sportscenter culture so it's really no surprise that for him this is the norm, now if I'm the manager do I want him doing that all the time? No, because then you'll be dealing with brushback pitches and hit batsmen aplenty and that's a headache for any manager.
If anything  though I bet the Nationals like it just like the Reds liked it when Joey Votto went off about the Cubs being "the enemy", they want team guys and guys who believe in themselves and you HAVE to believe in yourself to be successful in the majors and clearly he is.
I hope he has the type of career where he can justify these kinds of celebrations of "me" sort of thing, it'd be good for the Nationals and a good/bad thing for MLB it can be both.
I think overall it's much ado about nothing.

Harper blows a kiss to opposing pitcher

Probably not the best thing to do in trying to make your way to the bigs and establish who you are as a player but this story misses a key fact.  He only did it because he got drilled in a prior game...and you can bank on the fact that there were words exchanged in that game and the prior one.  Regardless, he is a very young and talented kid learning how to be a pro.

CoolI dont see where he done anything wrong. He hit the ball and trotted around the bases and thanked the pitcher for such a good pitch that was given to him.
