Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount by Major League Baseball for his actions in Tuesday night's game in Milwaukee. Molina was called out on a third strike he felt wasn't in the strike zone and went a bit nuts on home plate umpire Rob Drake, bumping him several times and -- as the MLB press release called it -- spraying him with spittle twice while arguing.

Molina's suspension began Thursday night, with the Cardinals playing the Marlins in Miami. Molina will not appeal the suspension, per a press release from the Cardinals, so he'll be back August 10 against the Brewers. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports a bruised hand that would have kept Molina out of Thursday's lineup anyway was part of the consideration. But Molina also notes he's not appealing for a different reason.

"I am sorry for my actions and apologize for letting my emotions get the best of me," said Molina in a statement. "I want everyone to know that I would never intentionally spit on another person and that I have great respect for the umpires and the job they do. I accept full responsibility for my actions and will begin serving my suspension tonight."

The suspension is bad news for the Cardinals -- even though they surely knew it was coming. They are 3 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the NL Central. Molina is a three-time All-Star who is hitting .293 with eight homers and a .775 OPS.

Seriously... FIVE games for this?... when a guy just got SIX games for throwing over a guy's head (but didn't actually hit him)???

Throw this in with the "two tries" to hit Braun the other night and I would say that crazy old Tony deserves about 10+ games of vacation.

I think his health issues are seriously clouding his head.  He probably needs to get checked out.

You are nuts.  This is not normal behaviour for Molina.  He lost it.  He did not physically attack the ump.  It is difficult to clearly define the "bump" on video.  He did not hock a lugie at him.  If there was any "spitting" it was a little spray that comes out when you yell.  Still not pleasant, but no intent whatsoever.  The wrong was in berating the ump like that.  Molina admits it.  He apologized for it.  He is taking his suspension for it.  Banned for life?  Crazy talk.

What is Baseball coming to?  Yadier Molina lost his temper and while that might be a discussion on how impressionable kids might view the situation, these incidents have been part of Baseball for many years.  Same with "brushing" someone back with a pitch.  At some point the Umpires have to be raise their hands and admit they are part of this issue too.  The Umpire could have calmed that situation down and that is what they are supposed to, control the game...not the outcome.  All I can think of is what would have happened to Billy Martin in today's Baseball.
