Ryan Braun

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The Baseball Writers Association of America will not strip Ryan Braun of his National League Most Valuable Player award if he is suspended for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, BBWAA secretary-treasurer Jack O'Connell told the Los Angeles Times.

Ryan Braun

"I got the same question after Ken Caminiti came clean about his steroids usage, and whether we should give the 1996 MVP award instead to (second-place finisher) Mike Piazza," O'Connell told the newspaper. "The answer is no.

"We did not strip Alex Rodriguez of the 2003 MVP when it was learned later he used PEDs while in Texas.

"The voters used the information they had at the time of the election. I don't see how we can change that."

The Dodgers' Matt Kemp finished second in the MVP voting. Braun received 20 of 32 first-place votes, while Kemp had 10. Braun received 388 total points in the voting to Kemp's 332. Braun finished second on all 12 ballots that didn't vote for him as the first-place finisher. Kemp had 16 second-place votes and six third-place votes. Braun's teammate, Prince Fielder finished third with one first-place vote and 229 total points, followed by Arizona's Justin Upton, who had one first-place vote and 214 total points.

Braun has denied he took PEDs and has appealed the positive test.

The BBWAA, not Major League Baseball, awards the MVP and is in charge of its voting.

Stripping Braun of the MVP means you have to strip those of Bonds, Giambi, Caminiti, Sosa, A-Rod etc. Where would it end? Do we strip their Silver Slugger awards too? Home Run Derby winner awards? Where does it end?

And frankly, how do we know Matt Kemp didn't cheat?

And the HOF is a different animal; see keeping one out of the HOF (such as McGwire) doesn't mean others get in instead. Also, it is a "future" event, where an MVP is a "past" event that one cannot change.

Pete Rose is banned from baseball, but he kept his MVP etc awards, as they were past. The HOF is a future even, where we consider the man if he deserves; Rose does not based on the man. Perhaps Braun is not either, and the others I mentioned above are not.

Very good point! What if the Brewers won the series?  That would have made for one hell of a controversy!

So, McGwire cant get into the hall because of roids, but this clown gets to keep his MVP? What the hell, you might as well just let Raffy, Mark, and Sammy in the Hall of Fame then. Just to make it fair.

Letting him keep the MVP award is nothing compared to letting him play in the playoffs. Baseball caught him cheating and still didn't do crap. Why not wait until after the playoffs to test if you are not going to act when you catch them. Way to clean up the game Bud. You are a world class dumb ass and nothing but the village idiot of baseball.
By the way, Pete Rose gambled on his own team and was banned from baseball and the hall of fame. But all these league supported cheaters are given a free pass. What is wrong with this picture. After this incident I look for baseball attendance and TV ratings to take a hit during the upcoming season.
