Phil HughesPhil Hughes, Yankee rotation hopeful, showed improved velocity in his spring debut on Wednesday, reports Marc Carig of the Newark-Star Ledger. Insofar as the Yankees' interests are concerned, that's of course a good thing.

Last season, Hughes suffered diminished velocity early on and shortly thereafter spent almost three months on the DL with shoulder inflammation. He showed more oomph on the fastball after his return from injury, and said oomph was still with him on Wednesday in his first Grapefruit League appearance.

Needless to say, Hughes will need to maintain that low- to mid-90s fastball as the season wears on and avoid the shoulder problems that hindered him in 2011. While the Yankees have done much to improve the rotation this offseason -- e.g., trading for Michael Pineda, signing Hiroki Kuroda and making A.J. Burnett go away -- a healthy and vintage Hughes may be necessary if they're going to win baseball's toughest division.

Phil Hughes's Fastball Impresses

I really like this Yankee rotation with the addition of Kuroda and Pineda.  A.J.Burnett was an emotional drain on the Yankee offense since he had been there.  With him gone and the emergence of Ivan Nova and additions of Kuroda and Pineda I look for big things out of the Yankees this year.  Freddy Ann Garcia was a shot in the starting rotations arm in 2011.  Not over powering but plenty of QS and veteran savvy on the mound.  Now only if Hughes can return to form I see no problem with the Yankees winning the AL East and making an appearance in their 41st WS.  The bull pen is solid and the Yankee offense is the Yankee offense.  Even with an aging Derek Jeter at short the Yankes are very strong up the middle with Martin, Cano and Granderson.  Big things in the big apple this year!

Phil Hughes's Fastball Impresses

With Sabathia, Pineda, Kuroka, Nova, and Garcia, Hughes is destined to end up in the bullpen, unless they decide to use Garcia as the long man again.

The Yankees will likely end up needing all of these arms throughout the season, but it will be interesting to see how they keep them all happy in the mean time. Unfortunately for Cashman, Hughes has no trade value right now (compared to what he's likely worth in reality), so moving him doesn't help a whole lot either.
