MLB leaves Colt .45s uniform decision to Astros

The Astros may or may not wear the original Colt .45s uniform complete with the smoking gun graphic, but at least the decision will be the team's to make.

Major League Baseball had originally told the Astros they couldn't wear the classic uniform with the gun on it as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration. When the team debut in 1962, the Colt .45s featured a smoking pistol, with the smoke making up the "C" in "Colt."

Now the team will make its decision known on Friday whether it will wear the awesome uniform or cop-out and wear a plain, boring, inaccurate uniform (can you tell which side I'm on?). In a statement released Thursday, the team said:

"Over the past few months, the club has been in discussion with Major League Baseball about whether to wear the authentic Colt .45s jersey. The original logo features the Colts name and a pistol. The alternative jersey would only have the Colts name on the front of the jersey. This week, MLB informed the Astros that the decision would be left to the ballclub.

"The Astros organization continues to value fan input, therefore the Astros have been reaching out to fans the past week to get their opinion on this issue.

"Our fans have expressed overwhelming passion and support for the Astros and our rich 50-year tradition. We plan to announce our decision tomorrow, Friday, March 9."

The team is scheduled to wear the uniform as part of its "Flashback Fridays" promotion this season, wearing the Colt .45s uni on April 10 against the Braves and April 20 against the Dodgers.

The Houston franchise wore the uniform from 1962-64.

Who's next to get the ax? I hear Bernie Brewer is in danger for promoting beer drinking? That San Diego Padre is in trouble for being too pious. My dog got bit by a DiamondBack, so I say he should go and that Angel is an insult to all us atheists.

Agreed, RichieStamos, although this has been going on for a very long time - Elvis got slammed for girating his hips! The Stones couldn't sing "let's spend the night together" on the Ed Sullivan Show, so we have been getting PC policed for a very long time. I love the uni's, but I guarantee you, the Astros will never wear them in a game. Smoking Guns - Outragous! This will certainly lead to anarchy. Funny though, how with all the PC censoring in our country, it is somehow still OK for Bill Maher to refer to American women as sl_ts, c_nts, and tw_ts on national TV on HBO and to spread his hatred of people that are not like-minded to him. I guess PCism isn't for everybody, is it? Oh well. At least I got to see a picture of the cool uniforms. Sad that they'll never be worn.

I absolutely love these uniforms, and I agree with my friend sstambaugh. This country has lost it's balls. People take too much offense to a logo. I mean this whole people getting offended thing is just going way too far. People got offended by rock and rollers like The Rolling Stones and now we wind up with crap like Justin Bieber. We as a nation got offended when our country would vote for elected officials that had strong moral character and look who we got on both sides of the aisle Democrat and Republican representing us now, a bunch of whiney crybaby losers who serve interests that are not our own. People got offended by the gas mileage that old classic cars that were absolute beauties were getting and now all we have is plastic cars lining our streets. Yet, we as a society speak to each other with more anger and vitirol than at anytime in our history, and that is turned a blind eye to. Instead of focusing on importing things like how we speak to each other. People are more concerned about The Colt .45's being some kind of gang reference. We need more things to remind us of our past like these Colt .45 uniforms so that hopefully we as a people can return this country to what made us great. Everything now is so fake. It would be nice to see authenticity come back to America, but it won't happen with everybody crying they were discriminated against everytime someone says something that remotely hurts their feelings.

For a struggling franchise searching for an identity, this is a no-brainer. I like most of the posts here...having the gun be an issue, ridiculous. I bet the NFL wouldn't have let the then new Houston football franchise be called the "Gamblers" either. That would've been sweet.

Trying to whitewash the past goes beyond "zero tolerance" all the way to "zero intelligence."  Next thing you know, you'll have an NBA team change their name from the Bullets to something goofy like the Wizards to try to reduce violence...  Oh wait, that already happened.

I admit I am an advocate for handgun control, but I don't see a problem with the uniforms showing a smoking gun. First of all, the name of the team was the Colt 45s. Next, the gun being displayed on the uniform is an antique gun from the 19th century; even the ATF is OK with the possession and sale of Colts. Next, it is just a baseball uniform, it isn't making any statement pro or con about firearms.

There would be no point to having throwback uniforms at all if you couldn't wear them as they originally were. It's the team's 50th anniversary (wow how time flies) so let them wear whatever they wore in 1962. And let Ken Johnson throw out the first pitch, if he is able.
