Jets RB Coach Misguided about Tomlinson's Role

Posted on: June 21, 2010 9:55 am

Lost in all the commotion surrounding LaDainian Tomlinson and the New York Jets is an answer to the question, With powerful second-year running back Shonn Greene clearly the starter, how will the Jets actually use their new veteran? Jets running back coach Anthony Lynn explained that, "It depends on the flow of the game. If we're better off in our big personnel, Shonn will get more touches. If we go little, like we did last year with Leon (Washington) in our nickel package, L.T. will get more touches. It's all situational."

Wait a minute. Washington was valuable because speed and quickness made him a shifty, elusive threat. The Chargers made Tomlinson available to the Jets because the 31-year-old had lost his speed and quickness. Tomlinson no longer has the lateral agility and burst to create his own space. As a Jet, he’d make much more sense in a Thomas Jones-type role.

Deep down, Lynn knows this. Or at least someone in the Jets organization does. That’s why the team invested a fourth-round pick in USC running back Joe McKnight. The 5’11”, 198-pounder is a classic finesse-based outside speed runner. Last year, Greene lay low as a rookie, and then burst onto the scene late. Don’t be surprised if McKnight does the same thing, only with an emergence taking place as early as October. Tomlinson doesn’t have the raw skills to be a featured weapon these days; his value is strictly in spelling Greene for 6-8 carries a game.

What year is it? 2001? You guys are smoking some serious killer buds if you think LT has anything left at all. 1200 yards? You might get that if LT somehow gets 500 carries! Or was that the next 3 year projections? Keep dreaming, and no, LT is not better than TJ right now. We are talking 2010 arent we or no?

LT will be fine this year!!  The Jets will use him wisely!! You really don't think the Jet coaches are going to give away their strategies for the upcoming season do ya? I don't see them changing much on defense. They are the #1-D in fantasy I think they will be absolutely HOT once again for the 2010 season. Hopefully, Sanchez will improve in his second year.

Much improved offense....????? I am not to sure of that....
Like I said TJ has alot more left in the tank than LT......
Did the O line not lose a starter also in Faneca?????
Sanchez is a bum !!!! Jets fans are in for a big disappointment
this year,,you heard it here first....I will look you up mid-season
to remind you of my .500 record, when the Jets start out 2-4 my man....

once again - say what you like but the only questionable win last season was the one against the Colts.

Ask the Bengals if they laid down in the last week & then got stomped the very next week by the Jets. And the Chargers & then the Colts (if not for a couple of injuries to some key DB's, who knows how that would have turned out)

Face the facts - the Jets are a pretty good team - they actually got better with the off-season pickups. All the haters can point out is about how Sanchez threw 20 picks vs 12 TD, how LT is washed up & so is Cromartie & how Holmes is a troublemaker, etc.... give me a break. Defense is scary good & the offense is going to be much improved as well.

We'll see - you think this is a .500 team (or less????), LMAO.

You know what I find very interesting ? The fact that alot of people, well most the Jet's fans
anyway believe their team is the one to beat in the AFC.....!!!! We are talking about a team
that would not of even made the playoffs last year if it had not been for 2-3 teams that layed
down the final week of the season and let the Jets back into the playoffs.....I find this talk of
Superbowl contenders very premature, let us see how Sanchez performs thru the whole season
and we will also see how much they will miss Thomas Jones, who has alot more left in the tank
than a washed up LT.....I personally look forward to the Jets being a big bust this year finishing
with a record at or below .500.....

great post, I observed the same thing with the Chargers last year.  And I agree, LT is atleast as good if not better than Thomas Jones.. I think LT will surprise and will be a great value for fantasy players out there.

I think LT is going to surprise some people this year, having watched all the Chargers games, LT never had anywhere to run, the O-Line was horrible.  Even an elusive and fast Darren Sproles didn't average 4 yards per carry.  The Jets are built to win, and LT wants his ring, don't be surprised by his effort.  Not to mention after a few untimely fumbles (something LT rarely does, especially in the red zone) the roles between Greene and LT will be switched.  I hope LT rushes for 1200+ yards and 15+ TD's.  The Jets say Thomas Jones had lost a step and he ran for 1500 yards, that says something about this line.
