Steve Smith to radio station: Whoops

Posted on: June 24, 2010 9:48 pm
Panthers WR Steve Smith, he of the recently-broken arm that occurred during a game of flag football, went on a radio station in Charlotte today, and the Observer has some of the highlights.

No. 1: he says he made a mistake.

“In hindsight, I wouldn't do it again. I was having fun. I love football with a passion. Playing flag football at the Y was a way to take away all the other stuff – the money, the contract. I was having a good time. But it was a mistake. I wish I could take it back."

Outside football, Smith told the radio station, he’s just a regular dude. He mows his own grass. He runs around with his kids in the backyard. He could cut off his finger when he’s mowing. He could pull a hamstring when he’s playing tag. Hey man, life happens.

It's a good point really. Jason Shirley of the Bengals has been walking around all offseason with a boot on his leg because he freakishly tore his Achilles while playing basketball. Athletes can't just confine themselves to rooms made of rubber and chicken feathers when they're not on the practice field.

As for what comes next, Smith said, "Some people are taking it like it will be a distraction. A lot of guys who play a lot of different sports do different things in their free time. Playing flag football at the time, it didn't seem like I would re-break my arm. But it happened, so I've got to deal with it. For my teammates and the organization, it sucks, and I have to do rehab and all that stuff. I just put my team and myself in a bad situation by playing. That was not my intention or what I thought the outcome would be."
