How the Pats are replacing Mankins

Posted on: July 6, 2010 10:32 am
With Logan Mankins holding out, Patriots right tackle Nick Kaczur has been working at left guard, according to Shalise Manza of the Boston Globe.
N. Kaczur (US Presswire)
This makes perfect sense. Kaczur doesn’t have ideal athleticism or footwork for operating on an island. As a left guard, he wouldn’t begin to offer Mankins’ mobility, but he’d at least provide adequate interior strength for New England’s power-blocking system.
Kaczur playing inside means that promising second-year tackle Sebastian Vollmer gets an opportunity to start at right tackle. Many believe Vollmer is the future at left tackle. The Patriots, however, have no interest in moving Matt Light out of that spot in 2010.

Manza doesn’t believe the offensive line’s tepid game of musical chairs will be much of a problem:

The key in all of this - as has been the case for much of the last decade - is the presence of coach Dante Scarnecchia. The sage Scarnecchia is a maestro at getting his linemen to work together and coaching up players; by now it is safe to assume that if a lineman can't succeed under Scarnecchia's tutelage, he won't succeed anywhere. After all, this is a team that won Super Bowls with players like Brandon Gorin, Tom Ashworth and Mike Compton as starting linemen.

No disrepect to Kazcur. But, there is a reason why he was a back up. Guard is the most underated posion on the team. They were completely unable to run the ball last year with any consistency. Ask Seattle how hard it is to replace a Guard of Logan's Skill set. A 32 overall pick when Pats could have gone many ways with an aging defense. they reached up knowing Mankins would not last beyond 40 pick...aka good luck

You can't bank on Welker fully this season. He is coming back from a major knee injury but I think Julian Eddelmen(sp) showed he can step up if needed. Moss helps open up things underneath for Welker so losing him would hurt some. The offensive line shuffling isn't that big of an issue. Kazcur isn't a new person to the team or line so everyone knows what he can do. Vohllmer played some last season and showed that he should be able to hold his own. Mankins would be missed, but I don't think it would be a huge deal for them to trade him or if he held out. I do think that Brandon Spikes will be a monster next to Jerod Mayo.

Ravens9595 makes a solid point, This coming from a diehard pats fan. We have been spoiled with the greatest coach and Qb combo in history. but i think your wrong a little bit; moss can leave tomorrow and we still got welker. Our team got alot younger with brandon spikes at lb and two good TE's we got in the draft. I think as long as we have Billy B and brady we will always compete in this leauge. and yes the ravens did kick the piss out of us in the playoffs no excuses.  PLEASE stop hatin the pats because we are good. I would be the first person to admit when we got beat fair and square...

Yeah Its called Injuries you idiot.

2008 your looking at similar year from 07 if he doesn't go down.

2010 is a full 2 years removed from Knee Injury. It's clear in sports major knee injuries need 2 full years to come back.
The defense will be MUCH better this year. Happy Vince, stonger bigger linebackers now mayo doesn't have to be eaten by fullbacks he can kill people now like he did in his rookie year.

I'd rather have "muscial chairs" on my offensive line than lose my quarterback for quasi-raping college girls on multiple occassions and have him miss the first six games. The Patriots offensive line, even assuming Mankins isn't coming back, has Matt Light, Sebastian Vollmer, Nick Kaczur, Dan Koppen and Stephen Neal. That's a good deal of talent and experience. The Patriots offensive line has usually been a team strength, whereas the Steelers offensive line is an annual Achilles' heel. The Patriots might be trending downwards, but remember, Brady missed an entire season in the 3-year stretch you mentioned. You will get a little taste this coming year of what it's like to not have your franchise QB for a long stretch.

You're wishing the Patriots luck in winning 8 games, well, good luck with Dennis Dixon or whoever and trying to go even 8-8 or 9-7. The Bengals and Ravens are both better than the Steelers at this point. We'll see Nov. 14th who's in better shape.

How the Pats are replacing Mankins

Pats had a tough schedule last season and this season it doesn't get any easier.
The ride with TB & BB at the helm is hardly over, fact is no team can win every year, just happy our team's qb isn't a sexual predator.

Yeah, I notice a trend, what are you on, your third six pack of the night?  What the hell is a patie? And they played 17 games in 2009?  10-7?  Try 10-6, and the last game of the year was meaningless, or they would have been 11-5, Moron.

Really? I MEAN REALLY?  Yes, if you noticed, he was including playoff games... hence the 18-1 record in 2007. If you remember, last year your team was dragged through the mud by the Ravens. And I don't want to here any of the "OUR QUARTERBACK WAS INJURED!" crap. Because so was Flacco. You Patriots fans are spoiled... but in a good way. I feel bad for you.  You have a marketing genius who's more press savvy then LeBron running the show, and the best coach in the NFL. That's not to mention a star QB at the head of the team, albeit, he's kind of slipped and probably will never return to 2007 form or before that (yes, I know he had an amazing yardage total last year, no need to bring it up). With dynasty comes disaster. The end is foreseeable since Brady and Moss cannot play forever. And while Brian will continue to coach like no other, you're still taking a hit without your two most talented players. I'm not trashing anyone, I'm just being sensible. All I'm trying to get across, enjoy it while it lasts, because it won't for too long.
