Larry Fitzgerald left Saturday night's preseason game against the Texans early and was seen icing his knee on the sideline after taking a shot while reeling in a 16-yard catch from Matt Leinart.

There's nothing abnormal about Fitzgerald leaving a preseason game early, but there is something disconcerting about the (arguably) best wideout in the NFL having to have an MRI for a swollen knee. Which is precisely what Fitzgerald is doing, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic on Twitter .

Somers reports that Fitzgerald underwent the MRI Sunday morning and that the Cardinals "are hoping it's only a slight sprain."

Clearly, that's an ideal scenario -- the really problematic thing is that it might something much worse than "slight." There's no team in the NFL that wouldn't be hurt by the loss of a player of Fitzgerald's caliber, but the Cardinals in particular would be devastated, with Anquan Boldin gone and Matt Leinart under center.

Don't expect to see Fitzgerald hit the field for the rest of the preseason regardless, though.

Update: (6:00): Turns out, the results of the MRI were "good" -- it's just a knee sprain and Fitzgerald says he'll be "conservative with it for a few weeks." It's pretty safe to assume that Fitzy won't be helping your preseason fantasy teams.

Update (8:29): Turns out it's actually a sprained MCL, according to the Cards' official blog .

Matt Leinart needs to become a better QB if not he is going to be leaving his WRs wide open for big hits. I just saw Leinart on NFL network doing a press conference or interview or something talking about the preseason game. He looked completely defeated, his head was down, he looked like he wanted to walk away and curl up in a ball. I think he feels the pressure but I also think his confidence is shot. It's like he still hasn't recovered from losing his job a few years ago to Kurt. Now it's his time to start and he just doesn't have what it takes. I predict he will only be the Cardinals starter until they can find a better replacement. I could see him getting benched in favor of Derek Anderson.

Kurt Warner always keep the ball low when a receiver goes over the middle. Matt Linart on the other hand doesn't know better, hanging his receiver out to dry.

GFY: I could NOT care less about the Cardinals or their fortunes this year. So I DO NOT have to deal with anything relating to the Cardinals. (although, as a Steeler fan, I have my own set of QB problems to deal with...but I digress)

That aside, I was merely responding to someone calling this a ridiculous post. It is NOT ridiculous. There is VALIDITY to the argument that a QB can be late with a throw or make a bad throw that may cause a receiver to be unnecessarily exposed and the risk of injury is greater. I NEVER came out and said it was Leinarts fault that Fitz was injured during the game. I pointed out that it was possible Warner may have gotten the ball into Fitz differently. Maybe Fitz gets hurt; maybe he doesnt. But there is some credence to the argument that how a QB delivers a ball and the timing of the ball to the receiver may leave the WR more open for injury.

If there was ever a guy that should be handled delicately in the pre-season, it's Fitz.  Can you possibly imagine the Cards without him (AND Warner, AND Boldin, AND Dansby for that matter).  Fitz is the kind of competitor that wants to be in on every play, from OTAs right through to the end of the season (whenever that would be).  He's a "Gotta Go-Gotta Go" guy, 100% all the time and that's just the way he is.  I know the play itself was a problem, but if I'm Ken Whisenhunt, I would cringe and pray every time something like this happens... especially now.  Fitz is just that valuable.

I believe Warner has retired Miracles. So maybe you should get over it and deal with what you have. It is not Leinarts fault that he got injured. You people are hilarious.

UNMF, you are right that this is football and people get hurt. Happens all the time.

But the original poster is not entirely wrong in suggesting that perhaps Warner would have gotten the ball to Fitz sooner and the hit may have been avoided. Experienced QB's put the ball in the right spot at the right time. Inexperienced QB's don't always place the ball in the best situation for the receiver to make a play. We have all seen plays where a young QB throws a pass that forces the receiver to twist backwards thus leaving his body exposed to taking a vicious hit.

As Leinhart plays more his accuracy and timing will approve.

You have to be kidding me that you guys are actually trying to place blame on somebody for this. This is football gents!!! People get hurt. Look I was not a big Leinart fan at first, but he has done his time and the way that Wiz is making it sound is that the job is his to lose. So unless he has a major melt down he will be our QB on opening day, we all better get used to that idea. If he would have thrown it sooner!!! Sounds like someone other than Leinart need to pull their head out of their A$$. You call yourself a fan!! That was the most ridiculous post I have ever seen.

A sprain is a tear.  just not a complete tear thru the ligament.
