Vincent Jackson deadline passes with no deal

Well, it's after 4 PM EST on Wednesday and the San Diego Chargers still own the rights to Vincent Jackson -- which means, folks, we're not going to see a deal.

From all accounts, the Minnesota Vikings worked pretty, pretty hard at getting something done, but in the end couldn't justify parting with two early draft picks in 2011 with the possibility of Jackson of being nothing more than a one-year rental if they couldn't agree to a long term deal with his camp. (Additionally, there's the fear of sinking money and picks into a player who could potentially face up to a year's suspension stemming from the personal conduct policy.)

This means Jackson will miss six games now, at minimum, and things are looking more and more like he'll end up missing the entire season. That's based not only on Jackson's previous comments but what his agent Jonathan Feinsod told Adam Schefter today .

"Archie Manning had it right," Feinsod said. "They call [A.J. Smith] the 'Lord of No Rings' for a reason."

Yes, that is a burn, and yes, it means that Jackson's agents (Neil Schwartz and Feinsod) probably aren't really friendly with Smith right now. After all, they wanted their client to get a new deal -- Smith's unwillingness to lower his asking price for the wideout means he'll miss a minimum of six games and have to wait what could be a lengthy period of time for his new contract.

And, potentially -- or perhaps likely -- miss the entire 2010 season.

Update (4:39): Jason LaCanfora reports on Twitter that he exchanged texts with Vincent Jackson who said, "I just don't understand why [a trade was not completed]. They obviously think I'm a valuable player by asking for such high trade compensation, but why am I only offered tender salary. My agents and teams interested did everything to make it happen but this organization stopped it. I just want to play football. It feels unethical and I am disappointed."

Wow -- that's a whole bunch of texting. More importantly, though, it's a whole bunch of opining from a player who certainly doesn't seem like he wants anything to do with the San Diego organization any longer.

"he told him he wasn't playing"?????
What kind of gay BS is that?
A.J. got more than Rivers from Ernie. Go look it up.
Not a rant, dude. Just I hate when father rules a son's career decision.
DID YOU NOTICE IM HAPPIER WITH RIVERS .
Eli can have that Super Bowl. The Giant defense won that one.
As to why he wouldn't play in SD? I know. Archie is a punk.
Who cares? Cosell is dead. Archie Manning was a good QB for a sucka$$ team.
The media love the Manning family.... so pass me a Snickers, lamer.
Hey Jasper!? So now McNiell signs on with the Bolts.
What you got to say?
Oh. that's right. Your an admitted Cheesehead.
When people call someone else an 'idiot'. they should back it up.
You claim I "rant/AJ is an idiot".
Dude? , that's so SO SOCAL".
You keep calling AJ an idiot, so come on and include the pro bowler
Marcus McNeill as an idiot since he just signed a contract.
You Packer fans might have a few championship wins?
But it's PAINFULLY obvious to me that it doesn't take much to entertain you in Packer land.

Vincent Jackson deadline passes with no deal

"SD is demanding a 2nd and a 3rd for VJ. Randy moss cost the pats only a 2nd when they got him. SD says they will only pay 3 mil. but want picks like he is a 15 mil. guy."

tjbinva, Wrong, the Chargers want a 2nd and a 4th.  Randy Moss was not performing with the Raiders and many thought he was washed up. That's why it was only a 2nd.  The Chargers put the highest tender on Vincent Jackson which is a 1st and a 3rd. That way if a team made him an offer they could match it or let him go and receive a 1st and 3rd in exchange.  This is how the business works.

"VJ is not under contract so people saying he should honor his is crazy. they own his rights for this year because he is a restricted FA, not because he is under contract."

You're right, technically VJ is not under contract but he is a Restricted Free Agent because of the contract with the Players Union.  VJ would have been an Unrestricted Free Agent but the old CBA says if there is no new CBA the players will need one more year of eligibility before they are an Unresticted Free Agent.  The player's union agreed to that contract so VJ can blame his situation on the union.

"SD is going to lose many draft picks like they did Eli."

Another fool that thinks the Chargers wanted Eli Manning.  The Chargers always had Philip Rivers higher on their draft board. They only used Eli to fleece the Giants for picks once they knew how badly the Giants wanted Sheli.

"for all those that say 3 Mil. is enough let me say he already has that so he will not starve sitting out."

I don't know what to say about this dumb statement. VJ DOES NOT HAVE any of the $3+ million he would have made this year.

"Finally my Jets, they did not fold and match or pay Revis the money he wanted. He got a fair contract for the best CB in the league. By his hold out he ends up injured, as somone else said Karma."

Vader1228, You make a good point about the way the Jets handled the Darrell Revis contract. I retract my inclusion of the Jets.  $11+ million a year for a true shut down corner who is young and in his prime is probably reasonable.

The Raiders paying Nnamdi Asomugha $16+ million a year is not reasonable. They set a bar that now every great corner like Revis will want to be paid like if not higher. That hurts the whole NFL.

"The Skins made a bad decision in Haynsworth because once he got his $$ he got fat and lazy. Prior he was a force in the middle."

The Redskins did the same thing as the Raiders. They gave a Nose Tackle a $100 million contract. A defensive NT!!!  Oh and by the way Albert Haynesworth was only a force the two years the Titans put the Franchise tag on him because each year he was playing for new big contract.  Before those Franchised years Fat Albert was never a force or in the news because he was lazy and took plays off.

"They were good friends with Ryan Leaf's family and heard firsthand how they treated their players like dogs rather than family. They shunned Drew Brees too - look what that got them"

ky10274jelly, Are you really serious?

After the way Ryan Leaf acted and performed as an NFL quarterback anyone that would listen to and believe anything he or his family said would be a complete idiot.

The Chargers did not shun Drew Brees.  Brees had an injury that many quarterbacks have never fully come back from and the Chargers had a young highly paid stud, Philip Rivers, sitting on the bench.  There were only two teams, the Dolphins and the Saints, that were interested in Drew Brees when the Chargers let him walk.  The Dolphins decided the the risk was too high because of the injury Brees had and backed out. The Saints were the only team willing to take the risk and they are lucky Brees fully recovered.

By the way for all the Marty Schottenheimer lovers, Marty is the one who played Drew Brees in a meaningless game to end the season when Brees got injured.  Brees should have been on the bench and Philip Rivers should have been getting some experience. Marty was an idiot that could not win a Playoff game.

Please go post about something you know about. Thanks

Vincent Jackson deadline passes with no deal

Every player (and agent) knows if your going to play for San Diego, your gonna have to deal with A.J. Smith and his no bargaining tactics. As much as I dont like the guy, it's his way or the highway! If you play well consistently- for a few years and not just overnight- you will be rewarded down the road by this hard nose. VJ take note from A. Gates! Sure glad I spent bucks on a #83 jersey last season that will be used as a Swifter now!

Vincent Jackson deadline passes with no deal

let's say you are at a job where at you experience and performance people are making $60,000 and your company says we are going to pay you 20,000. they say take it or you will not work in this industry until you do. would you do it ? no,

If my own selfish actions kept getting me in trouble with the law and prevented me from being able to do my job, leaving everyone else holding the bag...   I might not have a choice.  In fact, I most likely wouldn;t even be offered the lower wage, just fired and replaced.

Jackson is lucky the Chargers offered what they did after he got suspeneded on a second DUI.  He let the team down.

Besides, he is under contract and holding out, and he turned down over 3.5 million to play football.

Him saying "I just want to play football" is obviously a load of crap.

If he really wanted to play,. he'd be playing (when he's done serving his suspension for being a selfish d1ck that is)

Wow, what a punk. The most catches you have had in a season is 68 and you think you are a top WR? You have had 3 crappy seasons, 1 ok season and 1 just a little better than that. Rivers, Gates, and LT are what made you what you are. You go to another team and I guarentee you bust.

Stats please?!!

2005 - 3rec  59yr  0td

2006 - 27rec  453yr  6td

2007 - 41rec  623yr  3td

2008 - 59rec 1098yr 7td

2009 - 68rec 1167yr 9td

 3 year average -  56rec  963yr  6td

Yeah your worth it. Hahahaha

First time post here, but I was moved by Mhwahstink's wise words... Nicely stated. Grow up, act like a professional and VJ will get paid... Get the reputation for being a selfish baby and he'll end up bouncing around like TO.

SD is demanding a 2nd and a 3rd for VJ. Randy moss cost the pats only a 2nd when they got him. SD says they will only pay 3 mil. but want picks like he is a 15 mil. guy.

I am all about honoring contracts but in the nfl owners don't have to. VJ is not under contract so people saying he should honor his is crazy. they own his rights for this year because he is a restricted FA, not because he is under contract. at the same token if he wasn't worth his tender they could release him and that is fine but if he is worth a lot more then you are saying he should just take it. if he signs it and get's hurt he will lose millions more than if he sat out and signed for much more next year.

it's not about it being 3 mil. it is about this.

let's say you are at a job where at you experience and performance people are making $60,000 and your company says we are going to pay you 20,000. they say take it or you will not work in this industry until you do. would you do it ? no, we are protected by law that this can not happen. you would sue your employer for your right to work. NFL does not have that protection.

now throw in the added risks of season ending injury and i totally see his point.

SD is going to lose many draft picks like they did Eli. I was pissed that Eli could pull that stunt of refusing to go to SD when drafted but now I see why.

for all those that say 3 Mil. is enough let me say he already has that so he will not starve sitting out. SD could have got something in return but now they don't, Good !!!
