Giants K Lawrence Tynes sprained his ankle Friday, and since it's unclear whether he'll play, the club went out today and signed former Bengals K Shayne Graham.
Graham, you’ll note, is the fifth-most accurate kicker in NFL history (196 made FGs in 230 attempts equals 85.2 percent).
But if you’re talking about clutch field goals to win games – or to keep his team from losing – Graham has not been very good. He missed a 39-yard FG against Pittsburgh with eight seconds left in 2006 that would have put the Bengals in the playoffs – Cincinnati lost in overtime – and he missed two kicks in last year’s playoff game against the Jets, including a 28-yarder that would have cut New York’s lead to a touchdown.
The Bengals decided not to re-sign him, and he inked a free agent deal in the offseason with the Ravens that could have been worth as much as $2.5 million. But Billy Cundiff beat him out for the job in training camp, and Graham has been a free agent ever since.
To make room for him, the Giants placed rookie WR Victor Cruz on IR with a hamstring injury, ending his season.
