Mangold, Schottenheimer have disagreement

Despite a 4-1 record, Jets C Nick Mangold feels like the team still could use some work on offense. RB LaDainian Tomlinson has been a standout this season, ranking fifth in the league with 435 yards, and the squad is fourth in the league in scoring with 27.0 points per game.

But that’s not enough to satisfy Mangold.

Mangold wants the freedom to tweak plays at the line of scrimmage, and considering he’s a veteran and widely considered the best center in the league, perhaps he should be given that consideration. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, though, doesn’t think so.

The two had a discussion about the issue Friday, and clearly, Schottenheimer got his way.

“He’s holding me back,” Mangold said in quotes captured by the New York Post’s George Willis.

Willis wrote that on a scale of 1-10, one being a healthy discussion and 10 being fisticuffs, the disagreement rated about a 2. But still, that’s probably not the most-comforting incident for a team that’s been really good the past month.

“Obviously, when you have a defensive head coach and the top-rated defense in the league coming from last year, you know that you have to pull your weight,” Schottenheimer said. “We think we’ve done a good job of that, but we’re just getting started. We’re not pleased with where we’re at.”

Tempest in a piss-pot.  Who cares?  The Jets O did what it had to do: end of story.
