On Sunday, CBS Sports' Charley Casserly reported that Jerry Jones wants to give Jason Garrett a chance to earn the head coaching job in Dallas (we'd discussed this after his press conference announcing that Wade Phillips was fired).

In order to earn that job, Casserly cited four specific things -- discipline, motivation, game management and the emotional ebb/flow a coach deals with during a season -- that would play a role in Jones' grading of Garrett's work.

So it'll be extremely interesting to see how Garrett handles an early instance of insubordination on his watch: Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports that Marion Barber broke Garrett's dress code for the team's travel.

Instead of wearing "dress clothes [and a] tie," Barber wore "jeans [and an] untucked shirt" according to Breer.

What makes this particularly interesting is that Barber's a team captain, and unless there was some sort of miscommunication from Garrett to the team about the dress code, he doesn't have a great excuse for his attire, outside of "What Wade Would Do."

Players have done worse things before, of course, but if Garrett wants to put his stamp on this team and convince Jerry Jones he commands enough respect to be a head coach in the NFL, he's going to need to dish out some sort of discipline in this instance.

Given how stern he sounded in his first meeting with the media earlier in the week ("business-like" is the only way to properly describe it), seeing him do something extreme wouldn't be shocking.

If Barber can't produce a valid reason for his insuboordination, Garrett's actions should be simple; 1) strip him of the Captain title, 2) fine him for his insuboordination, and 3) reduce his playing time to that of Tashard Choice.  Do that or trade him to Buffalo or Arizona so you never hear of him again.

Cut him

Fleix jones is a better back anyways. If I were Garrett, I would nip that kind of stuff in the bud immediately.

Report: Barber broke Garrett's dress code

We don't know half the story.  Aside from miscommunication, there are a number of circumstances unknown to us.  So it is rash to presume the Captain of the team is purposely refusing to abide by one of several new rules.

Report: Barber broke Garrett's dress code

Hmmm I walked into a dog pound, picked out a dog that was malnurished and abused, I took him home and laid down the law and when he stepped out of line I beat the shit out of him.  Why?  Cause it was easy the dog was already broken.  I then walked to my neighbors who had a well groomed 130 pound pure bred baby killer of a dog, I took it home and laid down the law and when he didn't listen I tried to beat it and it laughed at me.  Why because I looked like Jason Garrett.

Who really laid down the law?  Jason or Jerry, yeah exactly.  And I totally agree with the guy who said the whole captain of the titanic thing.  Barber has always been a me first player, now its a me first team, seems to me the guy who made him captain should be fined.

"Dallas makes the Superbowl for the next 5 years when you autoplay Madden 11, that's why. Its not a video game," - Really?  Here's a team that went into a season thinking John Kitna is still an NFL caliber QB and Roy Williams was a good receiver.

I know, Tony Romo won 1 playoff game against an Eagles team that was sleepwalking through the end of their season and this makes him the greatest quarterback who has ever played, but you might want to get some perspective.

By the way, if your football team needs a coach to yell at a player about his clothes to convince them that they need to take their job seriously, then you've got problems.

Somebody said remove "Captain" I agree and add "waiver wire" to that title. Captain of a 1-7 football team is like sayingI was a navigator on the Titanic. If the Cowboys are smart bring in Justin Fargas for a try now that is a guy who plays with heart.

Remove "Captain" status if you don't want to bench him. Stop supporting all this B.S. from the players. On paper, this team goes to the superbowl. Know how I know this? Because Dallas makes the Superbowl for the next 5 years when you autoplay Madden 11, that's why. Its not a video game, dude. Its a job and its money and its season ticket holders.

Punish this jerk and send a message.
