Sidney Rice decides to play

Vikings head coach Brad Childress gave wide receiver Sidney Rice an ultimatum: either play this week or be shut down for the remainder of the season. The fourth-year wideout has decided to play.

Just prior to the season, Rice presumably irked the Vikings by undergoing hip surgery after deciding that he could not fight through the nagging injury. He was placed on PUP and has not been of service to the team all season.

Some have speculated that Rice’s surgery was a negotiating ploy (he’s looking for a new contract). That is illogical, though, as teams generally aren’t encouraged to pay big money to players who prove they can’t consistently take the field. Where the contract situation may have come into play was in Rice’s decision to suit up in 2010 (again, it’s hard to ask for a new contract when you’re not playing). If anything, Rice needs to play in order to shed his reputation for being lazy and content. (This isn't to say he IS lazy and content -- more than a few critics, including Cris Carter, have suggested this, though.)

Rice’s absence doomed the Viking offense from Day One (though a shoddy front line maybe would have ultimately doomed it anyway). The trade for Greg Camarillo has not filled the void at receiver. And, you may have heard, the trade for Randy Moss was not very successful.

So now Brett Favre has his favorite downfield target back. But after being on the shelf for some three months, will that downfield target be viable? And, with the Vikings now 3-6, does it even matter?

Sidney Rice decides to play

I think most of us could agree on only one thing.......Benoit isn't much of a sports writer. Mostly he tells us things we already know and when he does include a piece of usable information, he ends by saying "who cares?" or "does it matter?"because he's talking about teams with bad records; At least  that's what he did in the first two stories I read by him. It seems to have escaped his attention that MILLIONS of us are playing fantasy football and some of the most valuable players are on losing teams. Someone should let him know that WE care and it DOES matter.

Sidney Rice decides to play

Its time for the Vikings defense to start playing football.  That is the key to the vikings winning football games.  Great to see Sidney back.

Sidney Rice decides to play

The only other option the Vikes would have had is to activate him and sit him on the bench all game if he doesn't play.  That takes up a roster spot for the game and would be flat out stupid.  Can't really bale Chilly on this one, he didn't have much choice in this.

I agree with 94east.  Childress didn't tell Rice anything he didn't already know.  I know the Vikings weren't happy with Rice's decision with respect to the timing of his surgery, but to now call it an ultimatum is just inaccurate, as everyone involved knows the rules - He is either activated (and must play this weekend) or he will be placed on IR for the remainder of the season.  There's no wiggle room left, but only a decision by Rice (and his agent).  I believe he will play, as memories are short in the What-Have-You-Done-For-Me-Lately NFL.  No one will remember his 2009 season when 2011 rolls around.  If he doesn't play, his value, if it's still considered decent, will fall like a stone.  Rice also has to be very careful because if he re-injures his hip before it's completely healed, he may not play until mid-2011.

Sidney Rice decides to play

Hello! That was not Chilly standing up to Rice.  The Vikings have until Wednesday 11/24/10 to activate him or put him on IR.  Give me a break and get a clue.
