Jerry Jones might be scheming

Jerry Jones might want to circumvent the Rooney Rule (Getty). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might be making plans to try to circumvent the Rooney Rule, the imperative that states an NFL team hiring a head coach must interview a minority candidate.

Although Dallas only has won a single game since Jones fired Wade Phillips and replaced him with Jason Garrett, Jones might want to keep Garrett – who was once considered a rising star among assistant coaches – and replace the “interim coach” tag with, um, the, “real coach” tag.

Jones made an appearance on KRLD today, and he said (via the Dallas Morning News) , "There are some extenuating circumstances involved here. On my decision, how we'll make it, I'll have to present that to the league. So we'll see how that goes but I can't give you any type of answer to that because I'm not sure I'm through working the process."

Unless the assistant coach has a clause in his deal that makes him the coach-in-waiting – a clause Pro Football Talk says Garrett does not have – Jones will have to interview a minority. No way around it.

But Jones already has gotten his way around the Rule one other time. In 2003, when he wanted to give the job to Bill Parcells, he interviewed Dennis Green by phone. The NFL said that was fine, but since then, the league has mandated the minority candidate actually be interviewed in person .

Jones, I’m sure, will try to figure something else out if he wants to give the job to Garrett. I don’t know, does Skype count as an in-person interview?

That's funny Antz, because your little rant makes you look like the only racist who has posted so far.  As long as "whitey" wants to run things?  If I were to refer to you using the term "blackey" this message board would explode and Al Sharpton would be knocking on my door.  Nobody, black, white, or otherwise, wants to be interviewed knowing that it's only because they have to be.  So enjoy the fact that for some reason you're allowed to be racist without repercussion due some crap that happened WAYYYY before either of us were born and get off your soap box.  Try using some of that passion to tackle a real issue and you just might get someone to listen.

The reason Affirmative Action came out in the first place was because of REAL RACISM and centuries of slavery and oppression based on skin color:  it's not the bull crap you guys are touting as 'racism'.  It will never change as long as whitey wants to run things through the good ole boy system.  Just because he has to interview someone of a minority race, (ohhhhh...woe is me!.....what a TOTAL INCONVENIENCE!) it doesn't mean he has to hire them.   The freaking bigots are the ones who are at fault for this rule being in place...not the candidates that will interview for the job.   All the responses just go to really show who the ignorant bigots are and why this rule is there.

Without getting into any racial arguments, I'd like to know what some of the African American posters around here think.

I'd be offended if I knew Jerry wanted to give the job to Garret, but had to bring me in as a "token" interview.

I just think if he has a guy in mind, his mind is made up.  Don't waste my time if I don't have a real chance at the job.

Let Jerry pick whoever the f--k he wants. In todays day and age we need to have some give and take. The Cowboys are 2 and 7 and i do not think it matters what colour of coach that they have being pink, blue, green, white or black as most people in todays society see people for people. If they don't then shame on them!

The rule is a joke, like you guys said. I sure as hell would not want to be the guy called in to have the "formality" interview. Way to make me feel like a choad. Thanks, but you can take your minority interview and shove it up Rooney's arse. Interview who you want to interview. Seems like normal behavior to me.
