Clausen starts for Panthers against Browns

Breathe a sigh of relief Panthers fans (or maybe Browns fans?), as it appears Jimmy Clausen is healthy enough to start against Cleveland on Sunday. (Yes, he's playing against Jake Delhomme, the former long-time Panthers starter.)

Well, that's the presumption anyway, since John Fox announced Friday that he's the starter for Sunday's game, according to Panthers Rapid Reporter Steve Reed.

There was a possibility that Keith Null could start Sunday (Brian St. Pierre was a little banged up after his first NFL action that involved throwing more than five passes), and that didn't sound like an, um, fantastic option.

"They haven't told me [who will start]," said Null, who signed on Tuesday. "Right now I'm just getting into the playbook. [Your] guess is as good as mine."

But that's pretty much the Panthers season in a nutshell -- the good news is that there are a number of Panthers players listed as probable (along with Clausen), including running back Jonathan Stewart and wide receiver Brandon LaFell.

The Cats don't have a ton to play for given their record and lack of talent at a number of positions, but they'll at least be given a few games to determine what players will be able to contribute in the future. Seeing Clausen play well down the stretch would go a long way in ultimately determining who will be the likely No. 1 overall draft pick next year.

GoBlues: Why would you wish that on Claussen?! You should never wish that on anyone, but if you must, it should be someone that's good that you hate. Wishing it on an NFL Bust that is horrendous every time he steps on the field seems strange. Wouldn't you rather enjoy this man-child's Ryan Leaf impression everytime he reluctantly is trotted onto the field because the Panthers are so bad they have nobody else? The handling of the QB situation in Carolina makes Ken Whisenhunt look like a genius, and that's hard to do.

And the others don't? No one knows anything about what Pike can do at this level with a full start, really. I'm not expecting terribly much, but there's a chance he could suck less than Moore and Clausen and maybe exhibit some sort of potential (unlike Clausen, who doesn't seem to grasp the idea that an NFL quarterback should complete his passes).

Actually, Pike was a 6th round draft pick (there are only 7 rounds in the draft).  However, I do agree with Jyallahhh.  What is it about Pike that makes him less play-worthy than a guy that's sitting on the couch Monday and then in a uniform Tuesday?  If you're not willing to play him over a guy that doesn't know the playbook and had only completed 2 passes in a 6 year career, or a second year guy that doesn't know the playbook and threw 3 times as many interceptions last season as he did touchdowns, you should not have even drafted him...what a waste of a draft pick.  Add that to the brilliant move of trading away what looks to be the 33rd overall pick in next year's draft for a guy that can't earn a gameday jersey.  Aside from drafting Greg Hardy and David Gettis in the 6th, this draft (and season) has been a complete wash.  Mr. Richardson, thanks for nothing...signed, The Panther's Fans.  P.S. Are you gonna raise ticket prices next year too?  (That is, if there is a "next year")

@ fire coughlin...Tony Pike was a 8th round draft pick this year. That would make him a rookie. How can a rookie be a "perenial" backup in his first season? just wondering lol. Panthers suck this year worse than anyone could have imagined. First pick in the draft..pleasssse. That pick is as good as traded already.....

Go Blues,

You showed your stupidity with that post.  Do you run around with a pillowcase on your head too?
