Report: Vincent Jackson to miss 2 weeks

Vincent Jackson's 2010 has been, um, unproductive, to say the least. He held out for a long-term contract (A.J. Smith said thanks, but no thanks), served a suspension for his second DUI and served a suspension for the roster exempt rule before eventually signing his tender.

He returned to the field on Sunday night against the Colts, but did nothing, leaving the game in the first quarter with a calf injury. NBC's sideline reporter Andrea Kramer is now reporting (via her blog I think?) that Jackson will miss two weeks with a groin and a calf injury, after undergoing an MRI on Monday.

Here's the weird thing -- Kramer reports that Jackson injured his groin at the end of last week in practice and then injured his calf during pregame warmups while overcompensating for the groin injury.

However, Jackson was never listed on San Diego's injury report leading up to the game. So, there's certainly some inconsistency there, at least in terms of the groin report (there had been some rumor that he'd hurt his left calf before the game and then injured his right one during it) and what the Chargers told the public and the Colts before the game.

If Jackson misses two more weeks, it could be a pretty devastating blow to his free agency hopes, as he'll have -- at best -- three regular season weeks and however long the Chargers are in the playoffs to boost his stock. Considering the multiple reasons he missed time this season, it's safe to say that it can't get any lower right now.

And it doesn't help the Chargers either, since they expected him to be a "major contributor" when he returned.

Why play for a tender and take a chance on getting hurt

Maybe for this exact situation or risk?  Not play, forgo millions of dollars that he could have earned this year and now, so he can be a FA next year, play and risk getting hurt anyway, costing himself even more millions of dollars -- when you are in an industry with notoriously short careers, leaving several million dollars on the table by refusing to honor your contract (or the CBA rules on free agency in this case) by not playing is not a good decision.  Say what you want, you never get that season back or the millions you did not get paid this season.  Regardless of what his next contract pays, the money he could have made this year, and the interest he could have earned by investing some portion of it, its gone foreever.  Add to that, that there may be no NFL football next year and, thus, no millions for Jackson for another entire year yet his bills go on -- mortgages, taxes, cars, insurance, food, utilities, etc.  I hope for his sake he's been saving his money, but a lot of the professional athletes don't seem to save much resulting in a high bankruptcy rate shortly after their careers end.

For those questioning whether or not VJax is faking injury, it's hard to believe he would. Where's the benefit? He's looking to get out of SD, but he'd be an idiot to think faking an injury is the way to attract a better deal elsewhere...it just adds weight to the baggage he's already carrying.  Many players around the league are dealing with similar injuries. Would someone say Marion Barber his faking a calf strain due to losing his starting job to Felix Jones?

Different situations entirely (Marion Barber is not looking to get out of Dallas and is under contract for several more years, for more money than he would get anywhere else at this point), otherwise, I would generally agree with you.  But by the same token I ask "where's the benefit" to sitting out most of the season -- same deal, he's looking to get out of San Diego but how does sitting out games, not getting paid, costing yourself millions, "attract a better deal elswhere"?  I don't know if he's faking or not, I doubt it because an MRI would show that there was no real injury to the groin or calf, that would get out and every team would know...but given his past decisions I cannot rule it out entirely.

What is it with former Chargers faking injuries to get out of playing??  They need to be flipping burgers to understand how good they had it playing a game for a living and getting an obscene amount of money doing it...Cut him and Marriman and get someone hungry to play in the NFL that actually deserves the opportunity!
