Alex Smith returns as starter in San Francisco

The "Troy Smith Experiment" in San Francisco is over (for now anyway) -- Mike Singletary is going to turn back to Alex Smith for the rest of the 49ers season as he hopes to salvage his job.

It makes sense, kind of, to do so (which he is, according to a report from the NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora), given that Singletary used Alex as his metaphorical shovel to dig the metaphorical hole that landed him in the position where he desperately needs to win out just to have a prayer of coaching again in 2011.

And even that might be optimistic -- it seems all but certain that Singletary will be gone after this year, particularly with the rumored candidates (Jon Gruden, Jim Harbaugh) that might be interested in the 49ers job.

If he's gone, though, he'll have left doing things his way, and forcing Alex Smith on the field time and time again.

I'd bet you'll hear the "we want Troy" chants by the end of the second quarter.

I'm not a big fan of Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers." By that you mean you think Aaron Rodgers isn't good. What league are you watching, lumpoco?

I agree.  Me thinks lumpoco has a lump on the head.  Better check that one out, lumpy!  You also state the Packers need trick plays to win.  What trick play?  A passing game???  Wow. I don't know what he means by the Saints needing trickery as well, but perhaps he just meant the onside kick in the SB.

There is a reason why Troy Smith wasn't a first round pick and if I remember correctly not even close to one, it's because he's not that good. And I think I'll take it farther and say the kid isn't good at all..... maybe good for an emergency 3rd string qb that knows the playbook, nothing more nothing less.  That being said Alex Smith was a 1st overall bust.... and if that's their number 1 qb...... trouble.

Does it really matter who is the QB? Do you go with a shitty QB or a slightly less shitty QB, depending on the week? The 9ners need a new headcoach, offensive scheme (any offensive scheme), OC, QB, and now maybe a new RB with Gores future unknown. This team had a window of opportunity to grow this year and pulled their pants down and shat on it. All because they failed to address the two most key positions in an NFL team, QB and coach.

I hope there is a change next year as Sing just doesn't get it.The pieces for a good - great team are in place now all we need is a coach that is not living in the 50's and 60's.The nfl is a PASSING  league that runs AFTER they have a good lead to run the clock not a 3 point lead in th 1'st qtr.We may never know if Alex could have made it on a differnt team that used him in the shootgun or spread formations that he was comfortable with and had used in college.By using him under center was a recipe for failure and why the niners drafted him knowing that just kills me.We are reapping what was sowed all those years ago; time to move on.
