Brown to Bengals fans: 'You are stuck with me'

There's a tiny little bright light at the near end of the tunnel that Bengals fans are walking sadly down. Unfortunately, it's very small and it's the hope that when Marvin Lewis' contract is up, the team will clean house and try to rebuild things (once again).

Based on the letter that Mike Brown sent to Bengals' fans, though, it won't be with a competent GM-type person running the show, because Brown ain't going anywhere -- the following is an excerpt from a letter, via 1530 The Homer, Brown wrote in response to a season ticket holder's individual inquiry as to why his team stinks.
I cannot give you the response I suspect you would most like to hear. I'm afraid you are stuck with me in my present role, and a general manager brought in from the outside is not in the plans. I accept that your criticism is sincere, and I wish you well personally. We are working as hard as we can to return to and surpass the contending status we had as recently as last season."

Mike Brown
Ugh. The thought of being beholden to a guy who runs a franchise like ... well, is there a business to compare the Bengals to? Does any particular business refuse to spend money on someone to actually run the business properly while also refusing to spend the money to increase the value of the franchise instead relying on subsidies from other businesses? And is there any business that ONLY hires ex-convicts? Or one that's lasted as long as Brown's Bengals have without any success?

Because if there is, I'd freaking love a job there. But being a fan of a professional sports franchise that works this way? Eh, not so much. Which is why Bengals fans should absolutely be terrified at the prospect of Brown not improving things even if/when he clears out Lewis, Carson Palmer, Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens in the offseason.

Its easy to blame Marvin, and certainly he has made mistakes.  But he has had BY FAR the best winning percentage of any coach in the Mike Brown era.  So what makes you think that 1) Mike Brown would be able to make a good decision about who to hire or 2) actually give them the level of control required to be successful?

Things will not improve just by getting rid of Marvin (well, there might be a bounce, like there was when Marvin was hired) but eventually whoever the new coach is will be bungle-ized just like everyone that touches the franchise is.  Until the problem (mike brown) is out of the picture, any improvement will be short term and insufficient.

As a long time Bengal fan, I can tell you that the perception of Mike Brown is flawed yet accurate.  I know that may sound dysfunctional, but it is what it is.  To be honest, Mike Brown operates the Bengals as a cross between Al Davis, Jerry Jones and the Rooney family.  In terms of Davs and Jones, Mike Brown is owner, president and GM.  Like the Rooneys, the Bengals are a family affair and close knit.  About the only difference in the way the Bengals are from others is the small size of the scouting department where the coaches do the bulk of the scouting work.  Not to defend Mike, but this offseason moves have been decent.  T.O. panned out rather well.  The draft gave us Gresham and Shipley on the offensive side of the ball while Carlos Dunlap has come on strong midway through the seasoon as a DE.  Mike might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer in terms of ownership; however, the bulk of the woes for this season have to be laid at the feet of the coaching staff.  Marvin Lewis and company are to blame.  They can't enforce simple discipline to stop pre-snap penalties while being very poor at in game management when it comes to time outs, challenges, and adjustments.  As a matter of fact, Lewis has been poor in this area his entire tenure in Cincinnati.  The Bengals aren't lacking for talent.  Contrary to what some say, Palmer is still an effective QB.  If he weren't saddled with a stale play book, things might be different.  Mike Brown needs to clean house, and this time, he needs to bring in a proven head coach instead of a coordinator looking for a head coaching job.  I think with fresh ideas from a new coaching staff, the Bengals can return to winning ways and challenge for a championship.

I dont think its Mike Browns fault anymore, i think the league does not want the Bengals to win anything except a division. The league sure didnt want the Bengals in the Super Bowl again in Detroit a few years ago. They did there best to get the Steelers to the Super Bowl cause of a bigger fan base and because it was in Jerome Bettis home town. The league is a joke anymore mostly fixed to make the bigger buck. Why do you think the officiating sucks all the time?! College referees do a better job of officiating than the NFL does. Its all a JOKE!

Are you serious????  You are actually happy to spend an obscene amount of money to support these bozos and say that winning doesn't matter?  If you want to get drunk on Sunday's, why don't you go support a local pub and have someone drive you home afterwards.  It is "fans" like you that feed the loser mentality of this organization.

Detroit is close to being a good team they have a strong young nucleus.  Detroit is still digging out from all the bad moves Millen made when he was there.  Your defense is getting younger and better and you have a lot of the pieces in place on offense.  As a Packer fan I don't look forward to playing Detroit in a couple of years they won't be the two easy wins to mak off the schedule anymore.  Ford may be tight with the money but he has a GM and allows him to sign resectable players to solid contracts.  Cincy seems to have a thing for players who are disruptive and a pass in the arse to everyone.

Hey Cleveland.  Say hello to Hillis & leave LeBron along. Now let's see if you surround him with the caliber of players the basketball guy wanted.
