Update (10:35): Smith is donecakes, as Giants' PR man Pat Hanlon announced Tuesday that the wide receiver was examined by team physician Russell Warren and then had an MRI on his left knee that revealed an articular cartilage tear that will require season-ending surgery.

Steve Smith finally returned to the Giants' lineup Monday after a month-long absence with a partially torn pectoral muscle. The Giants rolled over the Minnesota (although Smith only caught one ball), but the victory might have been costly, as Smith will reportedly miss the remainder of the 2010 season with a knee injury.

The New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano reports Wednesday morning via sources that Smith suffered a torn meniscus in his knee.

"This does not look good for him at all," one of the sources said.

Vacchiano's source did not, however, "know the severity" of the tear, so it's possible that Smith won't miss the rest of the season.

Indeed, the Giants have yet to mention anything regarding an injury to Smith's knee -- he supposedly hurt his hip early in the fourth quarter on his only catch of the game, but given the shroud of overcoverage that Brett Favre induced onto that game, it's no surprise that some injury news could sneak out.

According to Vacchiano, when Smith was taken for an MRI on his hip Monday, the medical staff discovered the knee injury, although the Giants have yet to announce it.

What happens to Smith then, provided this report is true? Well, the Giants would either have to place him on injured reserve, ending his season, or hope that he can heal in time for one of their three remaining regular season games (and hopefully, the first round of the playoffs).

That's tricky, though, because if Smith doesn't make it back in time, he takes up a roster space and damages the Giants' depth.

Technically, its 3 different injuries.  ACL requires reconstruction, 4-6 months of fairly aggressive rehab. A Meniscal tear is simply shaved out, and he would be back anywhere from 1-4 weeks later.  An articular cartilage injury, if surgically repaired, means possibly a microfracture surgical procedure or one of a few variations.  Either way, no weight baring for at the very least one month, and then again a long 6+ month rehab process.

No one receiver doesnt make a team, but Smith was a pretty good one at that....especially when you have young receivers that didnt get any prior experience....

This will hurt the Giants....but hopefully others can step it up a notch,....

WHy's this fool below me have a name of FIRE COUGHLIN! You are a real dumb ass because Coughlin is a GREAT coach and we are fortunate to have him. As for Smith, this is a huge blow, huge huge blow. We can survive the regular season, but the playoffs is where no SMith will hurt big time. DAMN!

When will the NFL get a disabled list?  an IR is really out of date and obsolete.  a guy can get hurt in week one, then all of a sudden you make the playoffs, he is ready to play, but can not b/c he is on IR and not a DL.

Also, maybe this will teach big Tommy C not to keep his starters in so long.

Torn ACL?  Where are you people getting your Info?  ACL is not the same as a Meniscus or "articular cartilage".  Two different injuries.  Normally ACL is way more devestating than meniscus, but if he is out for the season AND playoffs, it sounds like a major cartilage tear, which can really give future problems.

A torn pectoral muscle has nothing to do with the torn ACL he suffered from playing. One is in the arm the other is in his leg. NO REALTION. It's unfortunate that he got injured as it further hurts an already banged up receiving corp. I knda like the idea of trying out Toomer if he's still in game shape. But looking to next season if Smith cannot play then I say Forgive Plaxico Burress and resign him. Just my opinion.
