Finnegan says he'll 'apologize' to Johnson Sunday

This weekend marks the second time this year that Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan meet on the football field. The first time they saw each other, Johnson did his best Rocky impersonation, delivering a slew of blows to a helmet-less Finnegan before both players were ejected (and eventually fined $25,000 each).

But unfortunately for all the masochists wanting to see more fights on the football field, it probably won't be happening. Finnegan said he won't retaliate.

"It's not going to happen," Finnegan said via Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. "I am more concerned about us winning a football game than anything right now. We haven't done that in awhile, and that is one thing we need to get back to doing. Retaliation is for the birds."

In fact, Finnegan is so contrite that he even plans to apologize to Johnson (presumably for years of egging him on in the hopes that one day he'd finally snap like he did).

"Regardless if I'm right or wrong, I am going to apologize to get this off my heart," Finnegan said.

Now, let's not go painting the guy who said he wants to be the dirtiest player in the NFL in too angelic a light just yet. After all, the emotions displayed before the game starts are entirely different than what gets thrown around during the game -- it's the "heat of battle" and whatnot.

Of course, if Johnson plays like he has the last two weeks (149 yards against Philadelphia, 140 yards and two TDs against Baltimore), he'll be the one apologizing.

Just for a legal beatdown this time around.

@denian: You were a DB and obviously not a fighter, and there's nothing wrong with that, and in fact that's a good thing.  In general however, the only time somebody smiles is when they have been wrecked and are trying to mask the pain.  Finnegan got absolutely destroyed, and with no pads and in an actual fight especially he would have been seriously injured had that gone on.  It's rare that a professional fighter will knock someone completely unconscious that is ducking and running away from them in only 3 shots.  None of these guys are pro fighters, and they are wearing cleats on a football field.  I would not want to get hit by Andre Johnson personally in a boxing ring, even if he isn't trained well.

Of course he's gonna apologize. It's a deflection, wouldn't want to get embarrassed like that again. He's lucky the NFL is not the NHL, otherwise he would've gotten pummeled.  So much for him trying to be the modern day Jack Tatum.

Yea  he got in someones head that was bigger then him and he paid the price.  There was nothing else he could do but smile.  If he had gotten mad then he woulda looked like an idiot.  He messed with a bigger guy then him.  Also  they were not 3 clean punches and they connected to a part of the head that you dont get knocked out when u hit.  if he hadnt ducked and got hit in the jaw  then he woulda got knocked out

I don't know where he prides himself on dirty play, he plays aggressive and does his job. Having played the DB position I know that I was always told to do whatever you can with in the rules to get your opponent off his game. I think he does a very good job at that. I also didn't see how he was humiliated by Johnson. Johnson threw the punches and connected on a man who wasn't even defending himself. He hit him clean 3 times and Finnegan was still smiling. That tells me that Johnson is soft and should be embarassed. Maybe I'm wrong, but you would think if you get 3 clean shots  being 220 lbs. you should knock someone out.

Not a big Finnegan fan on the field but google Cortland Finnegan charitable work...The guy does a hell of a lot for his community. Not that it makes his antics any better but just goes to prove that there is another side to a lot of these guys.
