A. Smith (US Presswire)
The 49ers are technically still in playoff contention, which means we’re obligated to pass along this story. According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Mike Singletary considered replacing Alex Smith with Troy Smith during San Diego’s blowout of San Francisco Thursday night.

This, of course, has happened before. In fact, it’s gotten to the point where, out of self respect, we’re refusing to offer analysis. Neither Smith can play, which is why neither can hold down a starting job. ‘Nuf said.

If you want more, you can read some of the previous “49ers changing quarterbacks” stories from this season:

Alex Smith unhealthy and out

Alex Smith healthy but still out

Singletary struggling between Smith decisions

Singletary had no choice but switching Smiths

No word on who will start for the 49ers next week against the Rams. "Once again, I want to get back and look at the film," Singletary said. "It wasn't just Alex. ... I think our offensive line has to do a better job in terms of protecting him."

I have to strongly disagree with keeping Alex smith, his record is horrible he 16 and 25 as a starting qb. You and every annoucer known to man spats off every week about how alex smith has had 6 different off cord. in six season....thats why he struggles. but yet shaun hill came in and in the 16 games he started for the niners he was a clear cut leader and all around better player than smith. he was 10 and 6 as our starting qb. why we keep mike and alex is mystery to me. Hell shuan hill as a back up has better career numbers than alex head to head. some people just see a 6ft 4in strong arm glory boy and never look at his leadership skill set. I want greatness like tom brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew brees, Big Ben opps we could have gotten any one of these qbs but instead we collect jim drunkenmiller and alex smith over the years, wow! We should be furious! and dead set at ending this darkhole we've been stuck in. not campaining for more of it. V.D. Crabtree, Gore and the rest of the off. deserve more than the weak coaches and qb.

Singletary contemplates ANOTHER QB change

Singletary is an idiot. He's a great motivator but he's not an X's and O's kind of coach. He doesn't know anything about in-game adjustments and he can't draw up a gameplan. IDIOT...

Singletary contemplates ANOTHER QB change

These comments are hilarious.....switch coaches and coordinators. That has worked out so well...We lost to the packers....head coach Mike McCarthy former 49ers Offensive Coordinator, Thursday we lost to Norv Turner another former Offesive Coordinator. Norv Turner knows Alex Smith the ins and outs alex smith had his best year under norv turners play calling. Norv knows how he reads plays and how to rattle him. P.S. I am starting the save Alex Smith Campain because I know for a fact if he signs with another team. See Leinert, Delhome, Grossmen, Derek Anderson......must i go on...Alex Smith is a good quarterback not great and we need to do something, but dont let him or singletary go...keep singletary as p-willis personal linebacker coach.

Singletary contemplates ANOTHER QB change

Singletary commented before the game "we're ready to play." No, they weren't. They may "technically still in playoff contention," but that statement is only a facade. Even if they miraculously get in, this team isn't going anywhere. They've yet to beat a team with a winning record, and are the only team to have lost to lowly Carolina thus far. Why prolong the inevitable? Singletary should be fired now.

Singletary contemplates ANOTHER QB change

how about the playcalling last night? Davis gets 2 late targets in a game you have to win! Maybe the niners need to make a coach and coordinators change (in addition to the QB). Pathetic!
