McGee likely to start for Cowboys Sunday

There was a loud argument made for Stephen McGee to start at quarterback against the Cardinals on Christmas Day, so the Cowboys could find out what they had in their third-string quarterback.

Andy and I both disagreed with that philosophy, mainly because it seems silly to assume that every single quarterback who's drafted in a later round is the "next Tom Brady." Or, really, to waste Jason Garrett's precious audition time just trying to see if a fourth-rounder in his second year can cut it as a starter when games don't matter.

But it appears that might be irrelevant now, as McGee's likely to start Sunday.

"He’s a capable guy, he can move around in the pocket, he can throw the football, there is nothing you can say like, 'Hey we can’t do this with Stephen,'" Garrett said, via the San Antonio Express. "I think he proved some of that in the game last week (against Arizona). He’s done a nice job in practice and hopefully he can carry that to the ball game."

Now, McGee isn't "officially" the starter, because Garrett didn't say that.

But his enthusiasm for the rookie is clear, and his situation has changed pretty drastically over the past six days. Since the Cowboys egged against the Cardinals on Christmas, Garrett suddenly needs to pick up a win Sunday and try to show that he can develop the Cowboys young talent.

Of course you should start McGee in this meaningless game. There are several reasons. First of all, after last weeks impressive play against the Cardinals, you should take another look at this second year pro and see what you have. If he can perform well against a tough Eagle D, then you know you have your backup for next year and maybe a possible future starter. Garrett has sewn up the coaching job, so he should take a look at players like McGee. It will have a major influence on his draft.

Jason Garrett has that job locked up. He stayed with the Cowboys when he could have just as easily have taken a head coaching job over the past couple of seasons. Anyway, Michael Vick isn't playing for the Eagles and I suspect Andy Reid will initially go with Kevin Kolb, but by the same token, I bet Mike Kafka gets some playing time in this one. Whether the Eagles are winning big, especially if they are losing big and if it's close, well, Reid may opt to try to see if Kolb can get the win or not. So I could easily see the Cowboys giving their depth chart the opportunity to play & be evaluated.

Will I Am Not,

You state, "But his enthusiasm for the rookie is clear,..."  Beginning a sentence with a conjunction vividly illustrates that you don't exactly practice grammatical obsequiousness.  Other than that, what's the error there?  Can you tell me before reading the next line?  Try.

As Mike Gundy once was wont to say:  Get your facts straight!   Stephen McGee is not a "rookie," as you state.  He is a second-year player, claimed out of Texas A&M ted in the fourth round of the 2009 draft.

The stat sheet for Miles Austin should look a little better with Stephen McGee behind center. Jon Kitna couldn't hit Austin standing in front of the broadside of a barn with a shotgun, let alone with a football. From Tony Romo to Kitna to benching Austin on my FF team because Kitna had zero desire to even look Austin's way, completing a pass to him, no chance.
