The Giants didn't help themselves out a whole lot in the playoff hunt this year, and as a result, Tom Coughlin was considered a coach firmly on the hot seat heading into Week 17.

Turns out, that wasn't the case and Coughlin will definitely be back in 2011, according to owner John Mara. This news was first reported on The NFL Today by CBS Sports' own Charley Casserly earlier Sunday.

Mara said following the Giants win over the Redskins on Sunday that "there was never any doubt" about Coughlin returning and that he informed him last week that Coughlin's job was safe and not to "listen to the nonsense."

"The only time you make a coaching change is when the players aren’t responding to the coach. That is not the case here," Mara said via the New York Daily News.

Coughlin, for his part, was asked if he likes coaching under the gun of the New York media.

"Do I like it?" Coughlin responded per Mike Garafolo of the New Jersey Star-Ledger. "Of course not. Who likes that? Who appreciates that?"

On the other hand, coaching under the gun is better than not coaching at all, and Coughlin will get the chance to do that once more in 2011.

Mara is an idiot and anybody who thinks Coughlin should be back is an idiot. There is a vast gap between a team quitting on a coach and not responding to him. They may not have quit on Coughlin, but he clearly can not correct the problem. When you have a repeated pattern of late season collapses fueled by a pathological tendency to commit mistakes, something is wrong...and it starts with the coach. The definition of insanity is to repeat the same mistake and expect a different outcome. To expect a Coughlin team to change is insane. PLEASE can everybody stop referring to the Super Bowl season. In Coughlin's entire Giants tenure, his team staged one magical 4 week hot streak that raised them from a marginal playoff team that year to champs. That playoff run is clearly the exception to the Coughlin rule. I don;t know which is worse; Mara's failure to even contemplate replacing his coach, or his criminal arrogance. Would he be snubbing the fans if he didn't already have their PSL money. This is also the kind of Mara stupidity that forced Rozelle to step in back in the late 70's and strongly suggest the Maras change their front office structure. That Rozelle strong arming led to the George Young Super Bowl teams. As for his teams regular season records, with the exception of that one glorious Super Bowl day, has a Coughlin team ever beaten a superior opponent by virtue of his coaching? Hey Tom, thanks for beating the Lions, Panthers and Redskins twice. your the second coming of Lombardi

Good call here.  I always appreciate it when owners stick by the coach when it's his PLAYERS (in this case) determining wins and losses.  A coach can only do so much when his QB throws a pick every time he's breathed on and his best WR on the field over the past few games was Betty White.

It's hard to imagine any different result here, you don't fire a coach who goes 10-6 on the season, a Super Bowl winning coach at that.  Under Coughlin the Giants are a model of consistency, even if that consistency involves missing the playoffs two years in a row.  They will be back next season and maybe they'll beat the Eagles this time!!

How can we ditch Gilbride but keep Coughlin.  How many 1st and 2nd down inside handoff runs to Bradshaw can we tolerate.  If I can figure that out I am sure the opposing D-Coordinators can!!!
