Report: Marvin Lewis to meet with the 49ers

According to Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated, Marvin Lewis’ representatives have contacted the 49ers about their head coaching vacancy. We’ll go ahead and take this as a sign that Lewis does not intend to return to the Bengals. His contract is expired; he’s reportedly meeting with Bengals owner Mike Brown Monday (though no announcement about his status is expected until at least Tuesday).

Trotter does not believe Lewis is a candidate for the Niners job. But he’s certainly worth interviewing, given his pedigree and the fact that, in the very least, he offers a convenient opportunity for the club to comply with the Rooney Rule.

Trent Baalke will be announced as San Francisco’s new hire at some point in the very near future. That’s critical because it will impact the coaching search. Baalke is said to already be involved in the process of interviewing head coaching candidates (makes sense given that he’s already on the staff).

If the niners could not get Harbaugh to coach our team I say we go after Gruden, Cowher, fox, or Mangini. All proven coaches
in this league, Im tired of rookie headcoaches but Im willing to give Harbaugh a shot.

Marvin Lewis has been a failure as a head coach, his teams have had more arrests in his tenure than wins... why anyone would talk to him about leading their team is beyond me.  I hope this is just to pacify the Rooney Rule, joke that it is...  I wish the NFL would get it's head out of it's ass and eliminate the meaningless and insulting rule that it is...  Marvin Lewis' best bet is to get a job as a coordinator and try to earn his way back to relevance by actually accomplishing something deserving of a head coaching gig again.

The Texans are looking for a new Defensive Coordinator...Lewis would be a good fit there...don't see any head coaching jobs (NFL) opening up for him.Speaking of the Rooney Rule, didn't the Minnesota Viking have to interview at least 2 white men before hiring a coach. ;-)

This is just a way to get around the Rooney Rule, which is totally ridiculous to begin with.  No one would hire Lewis after his consistant failures year after year at Cincinnati.  Everyone knows that the 49ers want Jim Harbaugh.  By interviewing Lewis, the 49ers clear the Rooney Rule hurdle.  The NFLis going to have to learn that they cannot FORCE a team into hiring anyone.  The Rooney Rule is an attempt to do so.

Something like this is an unintended consequence of the Rooney Rule. If the 49ers are not interested in Marvin Lewis, why is everyone wasting their time?

I'm not saying SF shouldn't be interested in Lewis. According to the source from SI, it appears they are not.
