As reported earlier by CBSSports.com, the Jacksonville Jaguars are retaining Jack Del Rio as their head coach, but there's a couple caveats. First, he's not calling the defensive plays anymore and if he misses the playoffs again, he's gone.

Owner Wayne Weaver addressed the media on Monday and opened up his comments by discussing the bad front office work early in the draft before Gene Smith took over in 2009 and how he'd spent the day talking with players about a possible change in the coachig staff.

"I had to reflect and say am I better off to blow this thing up and start over again with the coaching staff?" Weaver said, per Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union. "If we're not in the playoffs, it's pretty apparent we'll have a different coach."

Weaver also said that one player who he respects told him that "starting over would set this team back."

However, Weaver did say Del Rio will no longer handle the defensive playcalling for the Jaguars and Mel Tucker will take over that role.

Weaver believes the Jags have the nucleus for a strong defensive team and that the fans "will have to trust him."

"I’ve made bad decisions in my life but I wouldn’t be sitting here if I didn’t make a lot more good ones than bad ones," Weaver said.

Del Rio retained by Jags sans defensive playcalls

People don't realize that the Jags were a David Garrard wide open overthrow leading to an INT in the Indy game away from winning the AFC South with a roster picked to finish last in the division.
yeah right!   make yourself believe thats all it is. how about that overthrow at the end of the washington game?   your coach is smirking on the sidelines getting his a$$ pounded against the worst defense in football and you just think its an overthrow that caused them to lose the division??   did you watch the cleveland game???  or how about the tennessee game on monday night??  or how about the S.D. game?   you really think garrard wouldnt have fumbled if that overthrow would have been complete? he wasnt in the end zone. you dont think peyton manning wouldnt have shredded that swiss cheese d if that throw wasnt overthrown. the jags would have tied the game.  they were behind the entire game.  dont act like that overthrow would have won the game.  your coach is an incompetent fool and so is your qb.  hes too busy worrying about wearing his fedora in the post game and looking like a pimp. ... if he completes that pass as you say.  until the jags gets rid of the fools, this team will never be taken seriously and it starts with your coach.  8 years later and the idiot owner thinks all of a sudden in year 9 things will change because a player he talked to convinced him this was the right thing to do???   what owner does this???  no owner of a winner. can you imagine bob kraft asking a player if they should keep the coach after he choked for the 8th year in a row???    this owner is dumber than the coach!

Del Rio retained by Jags sans defensive playcalls

CaptainSeaDog, you hit it. The previous GM tried to draft Gators in the 1st round (Derrick Harvey, Reggie Nelson) who were GIGANTIC busts. The Jags blew up their roster 2 years ago and are on the upswing. They need to draft a franchise QB, Garrard is not the answer. It's frustrating living in Jacksonville and people are so critical, yet have no answer. People don't realize that the Jags were a David Garrard wide open overthrow leading to an INT in the Indy game away from winning the AFC South with a roster picked to finish last in the division. Besides MJD, Marcedes Lewis, and maybe Eugene Monroe, none of the other starters on the Jags offense would start on any other AFC playoff team. Give Del Rio another year and Gene Smith another draft and we'll see where we are next year...

Del Rio retained by Jags sans defensive playcalls

Couple of things to point out PatriotNation.  1. Brunell was not in his prime.  If that was the case why did he never start another NFL game on any team?  Obviously, he wasn't a starting caliber QB by that time.  Not saying Leftwich was the answer, but Brunell was not in his prime anymore and the young guy needed a chance to start. 2. Fred Taylor was not run out of town.  That's an insult to MJD who is an excellent character guy and will capture the league rushing title soon.  Had it not been for his knee acting up, he probably would have won that honor this year.  Fred was an excellent player and model guy, but this is a young man's game.  Seeing he has been injured ever since he departed for New England...sounds to me like the Jags made the right call.  3. You don't draft players to sell tickets.  If that was the case, then the Jags should only draft Gator, Nole, Bulldog, and Hurricane guys.  Tebow is a Florida legend and the best college QB ever.  He has great leadership skills, but does he have the tools to be a starting NFL QB.  His delivery is similar to Leftwich.  He has problems with accuracy on the long ball and a running QB in the NFL usually ends up having a shortened career (there are some exceptions of course but few and far between)  This is not a rebuttal for Wayne, but in my opinion your logic is skewed on what the problems are.  My biggest problem with Mr. Weaver is his lack of explanation to the fans on his goals for this team.

Del Rio is not an NFL caliber Coach

Wayne Weaver...well you made another bad call and it seems to revolve around you owing Del Rio $5 million for one more year.  It has been well chronicled how you don't look favorably on Del Rio because he does so little in the community.  When are you going to learn to cut your losses?  You are 79 years old.  Don't you want a winning franchise?  This organization needs a change from top to bottom, not only in personnel, but attitude.  I am by no means a Jaguars fan, but I live in Jacksonville and can be objective.  You run a second rate operation and it is a shame, because you are a genuinely good guy.  You and the community deserve better.

The mistakes keep getting compounded!  1.  You listen to the fans and fire Tom Coughlin, big mistake.  At least he cared!  2.  You hire James Harris, a lousy QB and a much worse GM.  3.  You hire Del Rio and let him run Tom Coughlin's players out of town, namely Mark Brunell and Fred Taylor, two of the best character people the organization had.  We didn't need Byron Leftwich at the time.  Brunell was still in his prime.  4.  You have the opportunity to draft a Florida legend (Tim Tebow), who is from the Jacksonville area.  Do you remember all the TV blackouts last year?  They will be back in 2011.  Tebow would have added another 10,000 season ticket holders, easy.  It would have more than paid for his contract and the money you would have owed Del Rio if you listened to the fans this time and fired him.  By God, New England, a model franchise even had enough interest in Tebow to fly him to Boston and wine him and dine him.  Jacksonville....never even contacted him.  A total insult.

Sometimes, the worse people to hire in football are so-called football people.  Del Rio is an example.  Maybe you need to hire me.  I would come cheap and I couldn't do any worse.  Sometimes all it takes to be successful is a little common sense!!  You blew it for another year.  LA...get ready, because this team will eventually be unloaded to you!~

Del Rio retained by Jags sans defensive playcalls

Yet another late season meltdown costs the Jags an appearance in the p;ayoffs.  It's always everyone's fault but Dei Rio's.
