W. Phillips (US Presswire)
Wade Phillips is back in the NFL. The Texans have announced that the former Cowboys head coach has been hired as the team's third different defensive coordinator under Gary Kubiak. Phillips will work in the town where his father, Bum Phillips, made his name.

It will be interesting to see what Phillips’ hire means for Houston’s defensive scheme. Since Dom Capers left, the Texans have essentially been a 4-3 team. They’ve invested heavily in classic 4-3 players like defensive end Mario Williams, one-gap defensive Amobi Okoye and mid-sized linebackers DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing. Phillips, however, runs a 3-4.

Given the terrible results Houston has had with their various 4-3’s in recent years, it would not be surprising to see a schematic overhaul. After all, no one would object if the “nothing to lose – things can’t get much worse” card was played here.

I'm sure he couldn't dedicate the same amount of the time and energy needed to be HC and DC. When he has been able to focus as a DC, he usually does pretty well. He is still an upgrade to the ex-Texans DC.

If he wants to change up personnel, I have no problems with the Texans trading Brian Cushing to the Giants where he can play less than a half hour from home. We need a playmaking linebacker.

Scheme wise there will be some difficulties in changing to the 3-4, but you only need to look at what the Packers did last year when they switched. I think that this is a good move for the Texans. They just need to find a Clay Matthews/Demarcus Ware type pass rusher to really make it go.

Not to bad Houston.  Wade was always a good def. coach, he just does not have the personality and organization needed to be a NFL head coach.  So what, neither do most coaches out there!  The Texans' def. was horrible, so trying to get someone in there to use the personel better sounds like it would be an improvement.  It is hard to judge anyone that comes out of Jerry Jones's pocket, because he does not let coaches coach.  Him and Al Davis tell there coaches what to do and how to do it.  Then he blams the coaches if things go bad.  I beleive Wade will fit in well and turn this Texas def. into something respectable, they do have some talent to build on.  With a draft pick/free agent or two, and some tweeking to fit players into the new system he will run, it will be quite an improvement.
