The Eagles took an official step to ensure -- for now -- that Michael Vick will return as their starting quarterback when the 2011 starts, placing the franchise tag on the 2010 Comeback Player of the Year.

Philadelphia also placed the transition tag on kicker David Akers.

"Michael Vick and David Akers were two of our most valuable players last year," said head coach Andy Reid in a team statement. "They were well deserving of their Pro Bowl berths and we're happy to take this step to ensure that they'll be back in Philadelphia next season."

It wasn't unsurprising to see the Eagles tag Vick -- it had been previously reported that they would do so. Vick's situation is a tricky one in that his original two-year deal with Philly is up and his strong play in 2010 warranted a serious upgrade in pay. However, handing him a long-term deal without confirming that -- as our own Pete Prisco pointed out -- he can a) stay healthy, b) play at an elite level and c) stay out of trouble for another year seems pretty silly.

The Eagles also have trade target Kevin Kolb under contract for a very modest amount, so there's some room to gamble, especially given how desperate teams seem for their backup.

Vick's franchise tag number isn't official, but he'll receive an average of the top-five quarterback salaries, meaning he's likely to get just over $17 million for the 2011 season.

Good luck Eagles fans in putting your Super Bowl dreams in the hands of Michael Vick.  The past season was a dream year for him and probably will not be matched in 2011-12.  He will be a year older and not necessarily a year better.

He owes lots still to investors from his bankruptcy I heard so I am sure his next season he will be playing for a new lucrative contract.

Huh???

I'm not a stupid person so I ask question when I read things that contradict each other.

As per this article Vick will receive" an average of the top-five quarterback salaries, meaning he's likely to get just over $17 million for the 2011 season".

From the Peyton Manning article ... Mannings franchise tag "is a little over $23 million."

If the average of the top five position salaries are used to deterien the  fanchise tag salary... then shouldn't Vick and Manning each be receiving the same amount?

Am I missing something?

yea either way they are taking money. he'll get about 1 mil from that 17. rest goes to UNCLE SAM lol!! suck it vick.

He owes about 15 of that 17... he'll get to keep about 2 million dollars of that money,,, a little more then you'll gross in your lifetime.

And then he'll get to keep the next 50 or 60 million he makes on the extension he'll probably sign with Phili half way through the season or somewhere else after the season is over with.

Oh, and there's probably at least another 50 million dollars on top of that coming his way in new endorsement deals soon..... all he has to do is stay clean another year and the puppy pitbulls are a distant memory...

Kobe Bryant settled out of court with the woman he was accused of RAPING.... oh yeah, while he was MARRIED !!!

Two years later he led the NBA in jersey and merchandise sales...  aside from the puppy lovers on these boards, corporate sponsors and your average joe in the public has a short memory.

Don't you stay up at night worrying about Michael Vick's finances... the 100 million he's going to make in salary and endorsements before he retires will far exceed anything you or I will accomplish in many lifetimes.

I believe he owes another 15 mil to the trustee so he can atleast keep all future earnings to himself after this year. Regardless, I have nothing against him as the Eagles QB. The Eagles had 7-9 talent and would of been in the basement if Kolb started all year in the NFC East. This is a very flawed team at key spots. OL and LB's. Secondary is shaky too. The problem is the 52 year old Fat Man. He refuses to commit to smashmouth football and is the most pass happy coach I can remember since Don Coryell. The lack of committment prevented those SD teams from winning it all and this fat slob has had a decade to prove that theory continuously. Yet....fans will continue to kiss his fat feet along with the huckster known as Jeff Lurie. Never mind that they are the redheaded stepchildren of that division due to the lack of jewelry. Fans of the Eagles refuse to admit that and truly are content with status quo this past decade in general. Otherwise, they'd stop buying tickets and merchandise until they get a coach who truly will commit to offensive balance.

Think you mean Bankruptcy Trustee Boomer. Anyhow, it will do the Eagles no good with their POS Offensive Line. Plus, they have no LB's. 51 year drought and more to come. Somehow....Lurie says they are the "Gold Standard." Fools Gold. Just like the fools who drink Lurie and Banner's Koolaid.
