Vincent Jackson gets franchised by Chargers

The franchise tags are just rolling in these days -- and you should keep up with our helpful Franchise Tag Tracker -- and Vincent Jackson's the latest guy told, "You're it."

The Chargers announced on Tuesday afternoon that they were designating the non-exclusive franchise tag.

"Vincent has been a valuable contributor to our team," said general manager A.J. Smith. "We want him to be a Charger."

People will probably think this is a disaster in the making because of Jackson's relationship with Smith, but it's not as bad as one might guess. After all, Jackson will now make north of $10 million a year just for 2011 (if it's played), and still has a chance to land a multi-year deal.

It's unlikely, but if someone offers Jackson another offer, the Chargers can either match the deal or receive two first-rounders in return.

Jackson's talented, but it would be surprising to see someone cough up a ton of money and the picks for him, particularly with the current labor strife (he can't be signed anyway right now and probably won't sign his franchise tag).

Then there's the uncertainty of the franchise tag surviving a new labor deal -- if it doesn't, that clearly changes things. If it does, Jackson can either work out a long-term deal with the Bolts or play one more season at $10 million in a high-octane offense and assume at some point the Chargers will stop paying him huge money for one-year deals.

A.J Smith is "The Lord of No Rings" as Archie said.
Archie didn't say that.  It was VJ's agent.  Archie isn't that witty.  Please don't give that idiot credit he doesn't deserve.

Lol @ the antiquated thought: That wr makes WAY more money than I ever will! He should be happy with it!
If a top 5 surgeon, engineer, etc is getting paid the minimum salary possible for their job title because they signed a job contract coming out of college, methinks they get restructured pretty fast. People get all pissy because these players make huge money, but they are worth it.

A.J Smith is "The Lord of No Rings" as Archie said. He is a disrespectful person who does not know how to run an organization... V-Jack was a top 5 wr 2 years ago and he was playing for the league minimum last year still part of his rookie contract. Give me a break. When the guy got on the field all he did was make defensive secondaries look foolish. The guy should have been rewarded with a contract, and now he get's 10 million for 1 year. It's a shame they will probably continue to play this game with him year after year, but hey he's finally getting the payday he deserves for the production he had...

should you be slapped in the face?
If you signed a contract, yes a CONTRACT you should fulfill your contract. Jackson decided to not come to work because he was a whiney little baby. The chargers didnt take his money, he did. Im sure he's pissed about getting the tag, because he wants a long term deal with gauranteed money. But to blame the chargers is silly. Wide receivers are a dime a dozen these days.

The Chargers are retarded. They let their star hold out and it cost they a playoff spot. Had Jackson played last year the Chargers would have kept KC out. Jackson should walk into AJs office and slap him in the face then demand an extra 3 million just because the guy screwed him last year.

It seems quite possible the Chargers played this one like a bunch of smart guys.  If they can get 2 1st rounders for this un-happy camper than start celebrating.  I question where the picks come from, I'm guessing the team who would sign him's first pick, and the last one of the 1st round.  If any one could clarify this, I would love to hear it.
