Looks like tight end Zach Miller will be slapped with the Raiders’ franchise tag. Reason being, the other tag candidate, Richard Seymour (a man for whom getting franchise tagged has become a way of life), has agreed to a two-year, $30 million contract with the Raiders. This according to Sports Illustrated's Jim Trotter.

All but $7.5 million of the deal is guaranteed. Seymour will get $15 million guaranteed in 2011 and a $7.5 million bonus in 2012.

The 31-year-old defensive lineman is coming off yet another Pro Bowl caliber campaign. The Raiders dealt the Patriots their 2011 first-round pick (which turned out to be No. 17 overall) in exchange for Seymour in ’09. He was unable to reach a multiyear deal with the club but discussions always remained amicable.

UPDATE 11:30 a.m. EST: Jason La Canfora of NFL.com says he's hearing Seymour's contract is for four years. Stay tuned.

All this negativity towards the huge contract seymour got...I don't get it. He was not only productive on the line last year, but help build a group of young players into big time sack machines. Another off-season together and that front seven will be dominant! 47 sacks last year a lot of them coming from that young front seven. Shaunessey had 7, Desmond Bryant had 4, Lamar Houston had 5, and Tommy Kelly finally earned his paycheck with 7. Although Wimbley(god I hope he comes back) led the team with 9 I believe a lot of it had to do with seymours guidance. They are only going to get better and Al knew the only way for them to get better is to keep an experienced guy like Seymour around. I think it is a great move it is almost like adding another coach to the already revamped coaching staff. And if that doesn't show you Al is giving up some of the decision making then I don't know what will. If the Raiders can get Huff, Routt, and Bush back then regardless of the draft this will be a great off-season. Nothing Al has done the last month will negatively effect the Raiders finacially or from a team standpoint. Go RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Raiders to sign Seymour for 2 yrs, tag TE Miller

There is much to be said for this comment.  I have been a Raider fan for years and any long time Raider fan needs to go no further than this franchise to see how valuable corners are.

1995 the Raiders are 8-2 they lose their top corner and finish 8-8

1983 the Raiders are 5-3 they sign Mike Haynes win 10 of the final 11 and take home their third ring.

2010 the Raiders are on the rise.  If they resign Asomugha they will go to the playoffs!  If they don’t, they will have a losing season.

If Asomugha goes to the Packers, Eagles or Patriots you might as well Fedex next years Lombardi trophy to them now.

Yes, he is that good and no, this is not Asomugha’s Mom!

Look at his stats this year. Asomugha was the least targeted starting Cb in the NFL for the second streight year. I dont know what you saw, but his stats say otherwise...

It's funny how some Oakland fans forget so quickly... the second somebody might leave, they can do without him.  Crazy.

Here are some stats from his last 3 seasons.

35 games in the last 3 years....  Only 81 attempts against him for only 2.3 ATTEMPS per game against him.   31 completions in those 3 years for a .9 completions per game against him.

In 2008 only 2 guys caught more then one pass against him, both going to the hall of fame and they combined for a whopping 70 yards...

In 2009 he led all db's in tackles for losses.

In 2010 HE DIDN'T GIVE UP A TD ALL SEASON LONG.

But yeah... it aint gonna hurt at all.

LMAO

This guy might be the best db to ever play the game and still playing like he's in his prime.

he was a man among boys last year
Exactly.  And if he hadn't overpaid Seymour, the Crypt Keeper might have had enough cash to sign grown men at OTHER defensive positions.  Again, I'm not down on Seymour.  I'm only pointing out the repeated, obvious flaws of management.  Somebody throw Emperor Davis down a Death Star shaft already!!!  Please?

matt_drz seymour isnt a DE anymore he plays inside now, and he was a man among boys last year. watched every raider game and he was absolutely unstoppable, this was the most crucial signing for the raiders and they got it done. he was our best player last year, and the reason our defense was so much better. who cares how much he gets paid, not our money. as long as hes wearing the silver n black thats all that matters

I'm not knocking Seymour.  He brings plenty to the table, beyond statistics.  It doesn't change the fact that $10 mil a season is too much, let alone possibly $15 mil per year for the next two years.  The Raiders defense was nothing special last year.  Seymour isn't a great pass rusher, and as a team they were only 28th against the run.  Obviously Seymour makes them better, but they need help in a lot of areas on defense.  Throwing big money at one aging D-lineman will not fix their problems.

Matt_drz, why would you knock this move. Seymour has proven to be a pivitol part of our D since arriving in Oakland. He showd up to training camp last year with the rookies, helped to mold some of our D-Line players and brings leadership to a team that needs it. This signing isnt just about what he does in the stats colum, its about everything else he brings to the table that you can't put into a stat colum. Not to mention, didn't he make another pro bowl?? This is a great move!! With all the good moves with our coaching staff (I was skepticle at first) I would hope we would be able to re-sign Asomugha, Bush (should come cheaper now mr. dui), Huff (not to expensive), Wimbly (give him a nice contract) and Gallery (or a G of equal or greater value). I'm also glad to see Miller staying, but I would like to see him sign a long term deal instead of getting tagged!!!! With some good free agent signings, another good draft, we could be on the way to at least the playoffs!!! Go Raiders

The field is no longer "cut in half".

I hear what you are saying and you cant discount Aso's contributions on AND off the field for this team and community...but I disagree with his performance this season.  He made the pro-bowl this year because of his reputation, not his actual performance.  I was at every home game and spent most of my time watching him when the D was on the field.  What I saw was teams throwing at him more than ever, I saw him get more holding and PI calls than ever, I saw him get burned alot...and perhaps the biggest problem...he got a reputaion amongst his team mates as being a bit of a baby, taking himself out of games with minor injurys.

No question the guy is a stud and a class act pro for sure, he is also one of my favorite Raiders of all time, but dont be suprised at all if they let him walk, the team is really up on young DBs McFadden and Brown....and with that much $ freed up they can get others to fill his void.
