Fox: Broncos will go back to 4-3

Broncos coach John Fox is switching things up in Denver. Namely, his team’s defense.

In an interview with the Denver Post, Fox said he’s switching the 3-4 defense played under Josh McDaniels the past two years back into the 4-3 employed by Mike Shanahan for the 14 years he coached.

The move isn’t a big surprise, considering the Broncos were last in the league in 2010 in scoring defense and total defense and because Fox ran the 4-3 in Carolina.

"We're going to be a multiple-front defense, but I think we'll make the commitment to the 4-3,” Fox told the paper. “The transition from the 3-4 to 4-3 is much easier than going from the 4-3 to 3-4, I will say that. So we feel pretty confident about that switch."

What does the move mean for players like Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers, who had established themselves as effective outside linebackers in the 3-4 scheme? Well, they both most likely would return to their original positions as defensive ends. The Broncos, who pick No. 2 in the upcoming Draft, also could select Clemson DE Da’Quan Bowers to help complement Dumervil and Ayers.

The linebackers who would stay in that position – for instance, D.J. Williams, Wesley Woodyard and Mario Haggan – also would have to readjust to a scheme that doesn’t require them to rush the passer quite as much.

Said Fox: "We're working through that with our personnel people, both our pro and college.”

No word yet on what Champ Bailey thinks of this idea.

I don't imagine you'll see a trade for Tamme.  He's cheap, good, reasonably young, and under contract.  The Colts
love to run 2-TE alignments, and then there's Clark's recent injury status to consider.  I can't see any reason that Indy would want to part with him.

It's not that he'd be a bad acquisition for the Broncos... it's just that the Colts don't have any incentive to trade him, unless someone offers significantly more than what he's really worth.

Without Fisher in the league I doubt Haynesworth get a sniff from any club. The guy is toxic. He's pretty much destroyed any chance to play in the league for anything but a low contract, and why bother. He doesn't seem to even like playing football and, thanks to the Redskins, he's set for life. The Broncos still need beef in the middle, a middle LB, a pass catching TE (hopefully a trade for Tamme),and some corners. I'd like to see them land Bailey outta Miami and maybe Jimmy Smith from Colorado on the back end.

No thanks to Haynesworth.  The guy has a crappy disposition and the disgusting contract Snyder signed to him will likely scare most teams away.

My only concern going back to a 4-3 is what we do with Doom.

as a broncos fan im real good with that as well. id say fuck the 3-4 but it would be a snub on the 77 orange crush but....hey i was just a little little kid then.

broncs are a way better 4-3 team imo.

Oddly enough, as a 'Skins fan, I'm excited to hear Fox is going with the 4-3 in Denver.

The Broncos become a potential trade partner in acquiring the services of Albert Haynesworth (good riddance) and perhaps Champ Bailey returns to the Burgundy and Gold as part of the deal?
