Would Titans 'snap up' Blaine Gabbert?

The quality of quarterbacks in the 2011 NFL Draft is a bit suspect -- there's some interesting talent out there, but no one who stands out the way Sam Bradford did last year (or the way Andrew Luck would have).

The most interesting candidate for the largest number of teams (Cam Newton simply doesn't fit the profile for everyone, sorry) is probably Missouri's Blaine Gabbert.

And Jim Glennon of the Nashville Tennessean believes the Titans would "snap up Gabbert in a heartbeat if he was available at No. 8 overall."

Now, Glennon qualifies that statement by using the phrase "based on the reviews" he's seen, but it's still kind of spicy.

The Titans certainly could use a quarterback, and it's the most glaring position position of need right now. But they've got the Vince Young stigma (heavy first-round investment in a "franchise" signal caller) still hanging over the team.

And there's a new coaching staff in town -- drafting Gabbert at No. 8 overall means that Mike Munchak needs to be uber-confident the Mizzou product can be "the guy," because they're going to be hitched for his career for better or for worse.

But if Gabbert's as good as people think -- and there's reason to believe that, despite the limitations that the Tigers' spread offense might have placed on him in terms of reading defenses -- then maybe that's not so bad after all.

Would Titans 'snap up' Blaine Gabbert?

As a fan of a team that is also in need of a QB I don't envy Titans fans. Sure the popular pick would be a QB, but I keep reading how everyone should really only draft QBs after the 2nd round. They still have Vince Young so the team is not in really bad shape. With a good offensive coordinator or QB coach Young would do well. Which is what can also be said regarding Alex Smith. I'm in the minority but I do feel that Alex Smith is actually a better QB than what he has shown for the majority of his NFL career. Alex Smith needs to change his jersey number because anyone who wore "11" never amounted to much in the NFL. The guy should pick "2" or "7". Now unless Norv Turner is the greatest offensive coordinator in the world and only he could turn Smith around I think Jim Harbaugh will do just fine with Smith. But then again most 49ers fans just want to get rid of Smith like the Athletics did with Eric Chavez. We have already invested alot of money and time on these two players it only makes sense to see it through to the end. Best of luck to the Titans and their fans.

Rusty Smith didn't prove anything for them. it would be a safe bet for them to get  Gabbert or Mallet maybe even getting Andy dalton in the third  round is stock is rising i can see him being a pro bowler in five years. titans need a corner badly or DE thats if Babin is gonna leave.  maybe a DT to get bigger at that poistion in Dareus. finnegan is the only good CB they have unless Verner can step up big.

Let's see, Gabbert or Mallett???  Hhhhmmmm.......  Mallett has more passing yards, more touchdowns, a higher completion percentage, a higher quarterback rating, he played a MUCH tougher schedule and won more games, he ran a prostyle offense and actually took snaps under center.  Oh, one other thing, Mallett is someone you have actually heard of prior to the end of this season.

Nothing against Gabbert, but does anyone really know who this guy is?  He ran a spread offense and took 90% of the snaps from the shotgun and did most of his damage on screen passes.  Mallett went up against the best competition in the country for 2 seasons and for a one and a half of those seasons, he did it with the best defenses in the country keying on stopping him and nothing else.  Almost 8000 yards passing and 62 touchdowns and suddenly the only thing anyone wants to talk about is whether or not the guy smoked some weed in school or not.

What about Rusty Smith?  He's got the size and arm strength, he played for a pro coach in a pro-style offense in college where he put up huge numbers.  They should stick with Collins for another year until Smith is ready and use that #8 pick on someone who can help NOW - not 3-4 years down the road.  Remember Gabbert, like Tebow, can't even take a direct snap from center.

I might keep Kenny Britt next season.  A move like this would help solidify that idea.

As long as the Cardinals don't take him at 5, I am happy.
