The death of former Bears safety Dave Duerson has been ruled a suicide, according to NBC 5 in Chicago . The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner said Duerson, a member of the 1985 Super Bowl team, died of a gunshot wound to his chest.

The 50-year-old Duerson was found dead in his Miami home on Thursday.

The Bears released a statement, saying, “We are stunned and saddened to hear the tragic news regarding Dave Duerson. He was a great contributor to our team and the Chicago community. Today is a difficult day for all of us who loved Dave. We’ll miss him. Our prayers are with his family.”

NBC 5 says that Duerson sent a text message to his loved ones before his suicide, telling them he wanted his brain to be donated for research. A friend of the family called the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine on Thursday night. Arrangements have been made for the brain to be prepped and sent to Boston University.

Dave Duerson's death ruled a suicide

Forever in the hearts and minds of Chicagoans.  RIP Double D.

The worst and most tragic of this situation is that he knew he was having these brain issue problems.  In this case, just knowing was apparently not half the battle.... Pretty scary to think that this could end up having the same effects on other players from the era.  Football, wrestling, these guys put their bodies and heads on the line for a living, but man....where does it end?  And the wrestlers that took way too many steroids and painkillers, such as Chris Benoit, proof that it may not only be the concussions that are doing this to these guys.  Commenters, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Double D was on any of that stuff.  I'm sure each situation with each athlete is different.  Who knows, it may only take ONE concussion for something like this to take affect later in life.  The guys with multiple concussions thus far, Lord only knows what's going to happen to those guys.  Aaron Rodgers, Troy Polamalu, Austin Collie from the Colts, numerous others.  Time will tell.  Hopefully by then they will have done on enough research to find help for guys like Duerson, before it's too late.

Dave Duerson's death ruled a suicide

Duerson was a smart guy and a great player on the best Bears and maybe NFL team of all time.  But suicide is ultimately  a sad but selfish act.  People who do this do it to send a message and get attention.  His family deserved better from him.

i dont think you got my meaning, but i thought i made sense..apparently not...i lived in new york my whole life, and never saw a racist act, even while incarcerated...doesnt exist in my life..was a shot at kkk and their philosophies, which are sad, but dont threaten me either...because if youd like to talk or meet..then we can..i didnt back down while away..and it wasnt a harsh crime, and wont now..but realize i have no liking  whatsoever for that organization, its pathetic...the fact that people notice the color of someones skin proves this country is still segregated, and i dont get it...what happened in 18th and 19th century was deplorable, but in my world i see usa has come a long way, while others disagree..but  to each their own
