The death of former Bears safety Dave Duerson has been ruled a suicide, according to NBC 5 in Chicago . The Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner said Duerson, a member of the 1985 Super Bowl team, died of a gunshot wound to his chest.

The 50-year-old Duerson was found dead in his Miami home on Thursday.

The Bears released a statement, saying, “We are stunned and saddened to hear the tragic news regarding Dave Duerson. He was a great contributor to our team and the Chicago community. Today is a difficult day for all of us who loved Dave. We’ll miss him. Our prayers are with his family.”

NBC 5 says that Duerson sent a text message to his loved ones before his suicide, telling them he wanted his brain to be donated for research. A friend of the family called the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine on Thursday night. Arrangements have been made for the brain to be prepped and sent to Boston University.

Dave Duerson's death ruled a TRAGEDY

My sincere condolences to the Duerson family!

First, my heartfelt condolences to Dave Duerson’s family and friends!

Based on the information provided in this article, I assume that Duerson died from Traumatic Encephalopathy - fort of a form of dementia and Parkinson. If that is the case, then I have to take exception classifying his death as a suicide.

When it’s my time, like most, I hope I go with any delay. Sort of "Beam me up, Scottie" style. Well, my mother wasn't that fortunate. Over a 4 year process, what started out as sliding her feet walking, kept progressing until by the time she died she was blind in one eye, near totally deaf, unable to speak, unable to stand let along walk, and during the process went through bouts of paranoia and jealousy . With all her pains, the paranoia and jealousy was brutal on my dad, her 24 x 7 caretaker until she passed away. Looking back, we now realize that the mother I knew passed away long before her body gave up.

So, out of respect for Dave and his family, I suggest to you that the Dave Duerson we knew was already gone, that instead a diseased mind decided to end the suffering. God Bless him for donating his mind to research!

Dave Duerson's death ruled a suicide

Duerson's note opens up the possibility that he believed he was brain-damaged, like so many former NFL players are. So sad. Sad that he may not have sought help and sad that he was just 50. When will the NFL take serious action against head shots? And don't tell me it already does. Fines are a joke if not backed up by suspensions.

Dave Duerson's death ruled a suicide

Judging by articles content double D must have known that the mood swings that drove him to this had everything to do with probable mis-diagnosed concussions he had throughout his hard-hitting career. By him donating his grey matter he must have felt that this unfortunate act will save lives. Andre Waters, the long-time hard hitting safety for the Eagles who chose the same route as Duerson did, also donated his brain to the same place. After studies they concluded that Waters ,who was about the same age as Duerson, suffered from dementia and basically had the brain of a 90 year old all caused by his occupation, Football. Tragic stuff.
