The Cleveland Browns have used their franchise tag on kicker Phil Dawson, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This ensures that the 36-year-old veteran will remain with the team for at least a 13th season. The cost of a franchise tag for a kicker figures to be about $3.25 million.

Dawson, you may recall (but probably don’t recall since, you know, he’s a kicker) staged a mild holdout last offseason in search of a long-term contract. No word on what this reaction to the tag will be.

Dawson was successful on 23/28 field goals last season. His 83.2 accuracy percentage ranks in the top 10 of all time.

I did some research on this because my first reaction was to scream out loud for franchising a kicker.  The average salary of an NFL kicker going into 2010 was approximately $1.7million.  That will obviously go up in 2011.  This move will make Dawson about the 6th highest paid kicker in the NFL.  He's actually a very good cold weather kicker, which is a requirement for a team like the Browns.  If you don't believe me, ask the Steelers who had to cut Reed in the middle of the season.  Couple this with the fact that the Browns really don't have anybody else to franchise this year, and the move makes seems to make sense.

Redskin, to my knowledge Dawson has never missed an extra point that would have sent a game to overtime.  No offense, but you of all people should know how important a kicker can be (and besides, who else would the Browns tag?)

$141,000 per FG

If he holds out again this year I'm sending my 7 year old niece to Cleveland to bitch-slap him.  p.s. - I agree with that earlier post. A little more fiber in his diet and he won't have to grimace like that when the coffee kicks in.

He actually got 500k for every inch of forehead.  Wow; if thats all brain in there he should have been a scholar, and if it's all skull he should have been a boxer.  Surely not a kicker for the Browns unless that giant head can figure out how to kick an 80 yard field goal.

BiBi, thanks for the compliment.  I try to keep things light, and at the same time, be serious about posting.  That said, on a serious note, I was watching the Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton the other day.  I was watching it with my 5 year old while his mother was out with friends.  When she is home, it's all Thomas the Train and Handy Manny, etc.  How is the Hulk violent?  It's CGI for Pete's sake.  Anyway, I digress.  I will bring this back full circle, I promise.
At one point in the movie, Dr. Sterns creates the villain,Abomination, and after the doctor gets slung to the ground, hitting his head, some gamma-blood drips on an open wound located on his forehead.  BAM!!  That forehead started to pulsate and increase in size.  Dr. Sterns eventually becomes The Leader (he has a huge cranium), and rumor has it, that the actor who played Dr. Sterns may reprise his role as The Leader in the upcoming movie, The Avengers.  I am here to say that the actor who played Dr. Sterns can forget about it baby!!  Look at Phil Dawson's melon!!  He has a naturally gigantic forehead!!  The thing is so humongous that if you look closely you can see rings in orbit.  You don't even need to fuss with CGI or make-up.  It's a no-brainer.  Phil Dawson is The Leader.  The studio saves money and another NFL star gets his big break in the movies!  It's a win-win.

IT's a good move.  Tough to find as reliabel a kicker as Dawson with the tough weather conditions in Cleveland- the bottom line is that the Browns don't have very good UFAs or RFAs
