The details surrounding Dave Duerson's suicide continue to become more disturbing -- it appears that at the time of his death, Duerson had a bankruptcy case pending in Florida.

Chicago Breaking Sports reports Duerson filed for voluntary personal bankruptcy last September in a case that is still pending.

The legal proceedings detail that Duerson had $34.6 million in assets and $14.7 million in liabilities -- however, the majority of his assets were located in a lawsuit (his company Duerson Foods, LLC, won a judgment but apparently hadn't collected) that he won.

Even that money wasn't guaranteed for Duerson, though.

"Debtor's ex-wife is entitled to 30 percent to 50 percent of judgment if collected," the bankruptcy filing showed.

The bankruptcy case also showed that his wife claimed Duerson still owed her $70,000 and that he was "trying to conceal certain assets."

All of these details indicate that while Duerson may have struggled with the mental aspect of post-football-life, he also had some serious personal issues present in his life that may have contributed to his decision to take his own life.

Steelwood.  You sir are an idiot.

You're getting your masters in psyc (heck of a major btw)  annnd you think suicide is simply a "selfish act" and that theres always a way to avoid it?  Whats next?  People with schizophrenia are just faking?  Suicide is due to brain abnormalities and disturb
ed thinking in many cases.  I learned that in nursing school.  Dav
e Duerson played football and suffered from several concussions during his career.   Repeated brain injury combined with his life struggles, perhaps insomnia could have very well led to him taking his life.  You're either completely ignorant or not very bright with the way you view suicide....especially since you're going to school for "Psychology"  Where are you going to college pal?  Ya getting your "Psych" major at National American University online or is there a special 2 for one major deal going on at Le cordon bleu culinary school right now?.

Can we all agree it is a sad event and leave it at that.  Why drag him through the mud?  Like any suicide I know about the only thing that is in common is an abundance is unanswered questions.  If I was facing all the troubles Duerson was facing I have no idea how I'd react.  Sometime I get all excited by something as simple and trival as a button coming off my shirt.  Other days the world could be coming to an world and I deal with it fine.  I guess I am unbalanced too, or unfortunately just human!

its a shame that Dave took his own life this way. Dave and I graduated from H.S. together. There would be times that we would pick each other up for football practice. Dave was a great friend to everyone that he met. He came from a good family that was well respected. Too bad that things is his personal life has to come out this way.  GOOD BYE DOUBLE D

Steelwood, I will not disrepsect your comments, nor any education you may have in this area; but this is a very sensitive topic and should be addressed with commentaries and input of empaty---and "some" knowledge on the history of famly suicides.

This is not a subject that I would like to say I'm familiar with, but, unfortuately I am. I have lost my father, cousins, uncles and other relatives to this tragic disorder; but also my brother and sister attempted suicide.

I can honestly tell you, from both a maternal and paternal aspect, that there were personal traumatic issues in every case....in other words they were all going through serious drawbacks in their personal ives.

I have heard for countless years, from the entire community that people who commit suicide are "selfish" and there's always a way out. That is not what they are thinking....my father personally told me before he shot himself that he could not live without my mom...he just could not go on. When my father went to the bathroom and shot himself he was in a moment of despair and depression...not cognizant of anything else, just wanted his internal pain to go away. If he was selfish...he could have come into the other room and shot every one in the family and then taken his own life.

You see....my father waa diagnosed years earlier with a chemical imbalance in his brain (disorder), but all research studies will clearly tell you that there is not enough facts/evidence to substantiate the link between emotional disorders and chemical imbalances. But the key here is this....with any type of anxiety, depression or ADHD, coupled with emotional situations---it triggers something that you nor I can figure out. You can earn MD's until your 90 years old and if the field has not figured it out yet--neither will you.

I am like the other responders to your comments....you didn't know Dave's personal situation, especially what makes him tick. I just hope and pray that he's in a better place. Some things in life....we just can't figure out....why?

Because we're not God!

Hawk,

If you read my post more carefully I specifically state that NO ONE knows exactly what was going on in that head of his in not so many words. Can you read? What I posted is one of the most basic ideas of depression/suicide. It's not that hard to comprehend. I may be studying it, but I do belive that suicide is quite the selfish act. If he was able enough to write a letter AND request his brain be sent off for research, he could've easily asked someone for some help. There's always a way out other than suicide.

Steelwood, you're everything that's wrong with people today.  You take a miniscule bit of information and woefully low level of knowledge of psychology and come up with a quick answer.  It has no substance whatsoever - you don't know anything about the man beyond what you've read, and grad school doesn't come close to preparing you to analyze this complex issue.  Just climb back in your box - an attempt to try and look smart here only highlights your ignorance and lack of training.  Anyone who knows what they're doing would never have posted some garbage assessment like you did.

On the other hand, I'm totally fine with your assessment of that crapbag Lewis.
