Fox: 'Kyle Orton is our starter' in Denver

INDIANAPOLIS -- The issue of starting quarterback in Denver was one of great intrigue, until John Fox decided to put it to bed in his first NFL combine news conference (ever!) on Thursday.

Asked about Tim Tebow and the possibility of trading Kyle Orton away, Fox quickly pointed out that Orton's currently the starter.

"As far as I’m concerned, he’s under contract and he's the starting QB for the Denver Broncos," Fox said. "Kyle Orton is our starter."

Fox also said that Tebow has "intangibles," which is a polite way of saying "he's a great leader and not a great quarterback."

All of this can change by the time that the season starts (IF it starts, of course) and it's possible that Tebow could make leaps and bounds during the offseason that get him a shot at starting.

But Fox isn't coming into Denver just to try and develop players -- he wants to win games too. And Orton, more so than Tebow, probably gives him the best chance to win right now.

Another interesting note from Fox's media conference involved the running game.

"You need two good players at running back," Fox said, pointing out that a "commitment to run" involves more than one talented running back.

It's unlikely the Broncos will burn the No. 2 overall pick on someone to pound the rock, but it's also not unreasonable that Knowshon Moreno will get some help in the backfield come 2011.

Fox also complimented his boss, John Elway, who's been prominently featured on Twitter, scooping every reporter in the Denver area.

"This isn't a P.R. move," Fox said of Elway. "He's burning the midnight oil. He's working hard. He's very willing to learn."

I say if Tebow is not wanted as a starter, trade him to Jacksonville, Miami or even the Pats. Belichick loves the guy and Brady is coming to a close eventually. Who better to sit behind? Why sit Tebow behind Orton? Hell, send him to the Vikings. But he is too valuable to sit on the side.

Because of your name "bommer" it appears that you may be a Sooner fan. By the way, Tebow has outplayed and outclassed Bradford in almost all categories. Nuff said.

I certainly agree that it's highly unlikely that the Broncos pull a worst to first next season but just to clarify, they beat Seattle when they played them in Denver last year. They couldn't beat much of anybody else but they handled the Seahawks. Anybody that believes that the Broncos aren't a better team with a highly emotional and much more physically talented Tebow vs. a steady but not spectacular Orton is living in a dream world. When you have a great defense, a guy like Orton makes some sense but without that and Denver's D is still a work in progress, the only chance they have to win games is with someone that can come up with creative ways on his own to punch the ball into the end zone. I like Orton too, as a back up. He's not creative and in fact tends to struggle when he's not playing with a lead. The Tebow haters will continue to hate, it doesn't matter what he does during his career. If you didn't notice a significant difference in the intensity of the entire team when Tebow was in the line up, you weren't paying close enough attention. What made it even more impressive was that they had nothing but pride to play for at that point in the season, think about how much more intense they'll be when they think they've got a shot at the playoffs. I'd love to see that happen in 2011, but between the pending lock out and reality, they'll probably be fortunate if they can claw their way back to .500.

They are by far the worst team in the division, and though they will have a much easier schedule, its not like they were beating the bad teams this year (didnt htye lose to seattle at home ?

I don't understand why Fox is making this declaration now. No one is demanding that Tebow start at QB so why stir the pot? Go into camp with an open mind and evaluate the best talent you have. You don't know what will happen down the road. Maybe Orton gets injured or something else happens.

I love how the so-called 'experts' put a label on a player.....remember what the experts said about Flutie? Too small to play in the NFL...He'll make it in Pro ball....No arm....oops!!! How about Brady? Was a bust at Michigan....Can't throw...Can't run....6th round draft choice...oops! Or how about Brees? He'll never play in the NFL after that injury....He'll never throw again...He'll be a back-up for the rest of his career...oops! Or how about Vick? He'll be out of shape after sitting out for two years...he'll never play in the NFL again....He can't throw....oops! Willis McGahee? He'll never recover from an injury like that....never play in the NFL...He's a huge risk...oops! Barry Sanders/Emmet Smith? Too small....will get hurt all the time....oops!

As a Bronco fan, I'll wait and see before I pass judgement on whether Tebow can play in the NFL or not. Until then, I don't care who's at QB, as long as they win that's all I care about. As for all the Faider fans out there, remember who has the biggest #1 draft choice of all time - Jarmarcus Russell. And now that walk corpse just signed Routt to a 3yr /$31.5 deal. My grandmother with her walker could juke Routt off the line.
