Frazier says Vikes have extended Rice a contract

INDIANAPOLIS -- Leslie Frazier's in Indy to check out prospective Vikings draft picks, the most important of which is probably whoever might step in to replace Brett Favre at quarterback.

But he also dropped some surprising news during his news conference -- Minnesota has extended a contract offer to wide receiver Sidney Rice.

"Our medical staff has assured us that he’s going to be fine and he’s going to be able to play and be productive for years to come and that’s how we’ve approached it," Frazier said. "That's one of the reasons that we extended him a contract and conversation about getting him a contract. So, we feel good about Sidney."

Chad Greenway was hit by the Vikings with the franchise tag last week, which opened up the strong likelihood that Rice could become a free agent.

However, Frazier's news is interesting in that it would appear Minnesota actually believes he's healthy enough to produce at the same level he did in 2009, despite some concerns that he wasn't 100 percent healthy even when he returned last year.

Rice would probably love to get paid before the CBA deadline, but it also seems he'll be interested in who's throwing him the ball if he stays in Minnesota. Frazier addressed that as well, pointing out that the Vikes will explore every option available to them -- free agents, veterans and draft picks -- in finding their next signal caller.

The Vikes have extended a contract OFFER. That doesn't mean he's gonna accept it. I didn't see any numbers or length, no details whatsoever.

Long way to a done deal, but Rice deserves a deal depending on the bucks.

I agree an another year from Favre, both from a practical viewpoint and the icing on the cake of pissing off all the Favre haters.LOL

Heck, I wouldn't complain if we get Moss back at a low frontend, peformance packed contract either, Wouldn't that be a hoot!

@evadzed
While I agree that Favre would still be better than Joe Webb and Tarvaris Jackson at age 42, he isn't stupid enough to play another season. Unless, of course, the offensive line magically becomes a unit of all pro studs and the Vikings throw $50 million at him. I have a feeling the Vikes will go into training camp with Joe Webb at starting QB. At least the coaching is now addressing the need for a QB. And ease up on the caps, man.

Favre had a bad season last year because he is old and his skills are deminishing.  He started the season with that bad ankle and that limited his mobility.  The career of Favre should have been over several years ago.  His last 3 seasons have been a roller coaster (down, up and back down again).  The Vikings will be smart to leave Favre in Mississippi next season.

EVEN THOUGH JUST ABOUT EVERYONE WOULD DISAGREE WITH ME- BRETT FAVRE SHOULD BE THE QUARTERBACK IN MINNESOTA THIS UPCOMING SEASON.  FORGET THE OFF-THE-FIELD EPISODE WITH THE MONEYSEEKING WHORE IN NEW YORK.  I'VE BEEN A VIKING FAN SINCE 1975 AND I'LL TELL YOU SOMETHING- THE VIKINGS WILL NOT COME CLOSE TO WHAT FAVRE CAN GIVE THEM THIS YEAR IF HE ISN'T IN THE POCKET.  I UNDERSTAND THAT HE DID NOT HAVE A GOOD YEAR LAST YEAR BUT ANYONE WHO KNOWS FOOTBALL WILL TELL YOU THAT MOST OF THE FAULT WOULD BE ATTRIBUTED TO THE OFFENSIVE LINE. IF THE OFFENSIVE LINE WAS HONEST THEY WOULD TELL YOU THE SAME THING.  IF FAVRE DOESN'T PLAY IN MINNESOTA THIS YEAR- I GUARANTEE THE VIKINGS WILL BE FORTUNATE TO AVERAGE 15 POINTS A GAME.  FUNNY HOW FAVRE THREW FOR 33 TD'S AND ONLY 7 INT'S THE YEAR BEFORE BUT 1 YEAR LATER PEOPLE SAY HE IS TOO OLD.  JOE WEBB AND TARVARIS JACKSON ARE NOT THE ANSWER AND EVERYONE KNOWS THIS FACT!
