Cam Newton 'struggled' in some team interviews

Cam Newton's struggles in the throwing session at the Combine Sunday have already been well documented. His strategy of reading a prepared statement and refusing to acknowledge the extent of the "mistakes" he made earlier in his career while at Florida has been hotly contested.

Even more of a concern, however, is that the reigning Heisman winner is also struggling answering football questions during team interviews at the Combine.

NFLDraftScout.com has learned that at least two teams gave Newton poor grades for his "football character" following interviewing him at the Combine. Newton, according to league sources, had a difficult time drawing up plays and how to react to different defensive schemes when asked to work on the white board.

There is no denying Newton's potential, but his success in spread option offense much simpler than anything he'll see in the NFL continues to be his greatest challenge. Not all teams are convinced he has the ability to make the adjustment to the complex defensive schemes he'll see at the pro level.

Jesse James wrote: "I dont understand all the hatred towards Cam Newton.  It wasnt him who killed 1.3 million Iraqis."

Nor did we. That's a nonsense number, made up out of whole cloth. It's just one more thing for the 'Hate America First'-ers to exercise their gums about.

I mean I think the same can be said about Tim Tebow, he has tons of athletic ability, great work ethic, but his arm is suspect and his brain is lacking the smarts it takes to be a successful NFL QB.

A lot of hate issues there, friend.  You might want to check your facts as well.  Tebow graduated with something like a 3.7 average.  I doubt you had that, so slinging around terms like dumb might backfire on you.  And he did graduate.  His arm is not suspect.  He makes all the throws on time.  Occasionally, he arcs on, but name any QB who has played on year in the NFL who hasn't.  His passing stats, and the variety of throws he has made are a matter of record, not speculation.  He has done in real time in games.  He has performed well on a mediocre club when called on.  Time will tell if he becomes the fulltime starter in the NFL, but it's safe to say he belongs and will improve.  Besides, he isn't likely to squander his talents by boozing, carousing, and sniffing it up his nose.  Given enough time and a coaching staff that aren't complete embeciles, he will improve, and we'll see.

As for his football I.Q., Simms, who analyzed film and questioned him about gameplanning, came away impressed, before last year's combine.  His opinion was that Tebow would know more than many assistants about game planning and scheming.  They combine people all said his intangibles were "off the charts".  They weren't talking only about cheerleading or character, but also about football I.Q.  Wonderlics aren't all that.  I believe the aforementioned Elway also had a spectacularly mediocre Wonderlic, and he was a Stanford grad.

As a follow up....I will be very clear,  the folks who are doubting his on field capabilities have not seen him play.  I am neither his biggest fan, or an Auburn fan at all.  But on field, he is a born player with off the chart skills.   So, the fat and slow, and wont make it physically comments, you are dead wrong.  That wont be his downfall....

I just hope he doesnt become Kanye Newton, that would be my only fear....

In my honest opinion..

He just seems to come off so fake.   It seems that his replies and the answers he gives, are contrived and stock, and not really the answers.    I think his less than coy attitude to what happpened off the field at Auburn and Miss State, as well as Fla. is an indicator of his cold, and rather calculated demeanor and attitude.  On the field, awesome, saw some amazing plays, that simply put, others cant do.     But that fakeness, ugh, it just sticks with me.

Something tells me, he will be fine in the NFL, on the field, but I have worries off.  I actually hope I am wrong, and he is a solid pro.   I think Tennessee is crazy NOT to take him.   He is dang near a local, with many of his DIE HARD fans at AU can take 65 North and hang in Nashville for a game.   So, I think it works all around for him there.  If I was him, WASH would be the LAST PLACE I WANNA GO.

Anyway...personally, and I usually seperate this, I just dont like his smug coyness, and its got nothing to with Combine, that is just me watching him all year...

OK, so we are finding out that physically he may have the talent, but mentally he may be lacking.  We found out last week that he wanted to be an "entertainer", we know of his past, and his dad, and the things that went on in school, at least some of them.  So why would a team invest all the money that will be out there on a player that has all these issues?  This is where that rookie cap comes in.  Remember Jamarcus and all that wasted money, and Leaf, and the others.  Talent in college is not always transferred into the NFL.  These players want to be drafted with all the big bucks of a veteran but then act like it's all new and they are just rookies.

Yep--I'll call it now:  Too slow and dumb to play in the NFL at star level.
