With the fitting backdrop of the Barry Bonds trial underway in San Francisco, the NFL is going to insist that HGH testing of players become an incorporated part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

That bombshell comes from NFL vice president and general counsel Adolpho Birch, who also oversees the NFL's drug testing program. "We want it," Birch told FOXSports.com's Alex Marvez on Thursday. "We think it's necessary. We're going to ensure that it's done.

"That's something very important to us and the integrity of our game. We believe some of the basis for going slowly on it before has been addressed. At this point, it's proper for it to be an active part of our program."

The NFL wanting HGH testing isn't exactly new -- in January of last year, the league requested that testing for the performance-enhancing drug be implemented. But DeMaurice Smith and the NFLPA declined.
NFL Labor

"The NFLPA along with the NFL has supported research to find a suitable test that will detect sustained HGH use," the then-union said in a February 2010 statement. "We have and will continue to work with the NFL to build a system that is fair, reliable and maintains the integrity of our game and the health and safety of our players."

They NFLPA has a valid point in terms of HGH, because there's not necessarily a guaranteed way in which to test for HGH using simply urine samples.

And one of the things that doesn't get mentioned much in all the NFL labor negotiations is that NFL players really don't like the idea of the league getting a hold of blood and urine and whatnot, unless it's a mandated drug test.

If the NFL gets its way, and HGH testing becomes standard, there's a pretty good chance that their concerns over the league holding onto those samples will become real.

so IRREGARDLESS, thanks for taking a decent comment and ruining it by insulting me.

Decent comment? Yours? You mean uneducated comment? Ignorant comment? Childish comment?

this sounds more like some kind of ploy for leverage.  what deal? listen folks, if the nfl has as big a hard on as they claim about this issue for the "integrity of the game" then why is this the first time i'm hearing that it MUST be part of some new deal that the two sides aren't even negotiating.  gimme a break.  you guys see through this right?  Goodell's a tool!

The pure speculation, your ignorance of not knowing about last year, while it is included in the article you are commenting on, your assuming that this is all Goodell, when it has to do with owners, the competition committee comprised of coaches etc...

what did i do to you?

You posted something stupid on a message board.

no, i don't work for or play for the nfl, thank you captain obvious, but don't you see the timing of bringing it up again comes at a time when they, the nfl, could use as much leverage as they can get.

Last year in January? 2010. Yeah that makes perfect sense. Do you suggest that it was not part of the deal submitted prior to talks breaking down, you do not wonder if this was one of the sticking points the sides did not agree on? You know more than everyone in the world and have inside knowledge?

you are also a tool. and short sighted.

Because I pay attention, and speak from a position of knowledge as opposed to conspiracy theories...right...

now don't let my french fries burn while you're busy making stupid comments on cbs.

You couldn't burn an ant with a magnifying glass junior.

reedtaz73 ....  any chance you even read the article???? The owners have been trying since January 2010 to get the union to agree to it with a formal proposal and prior to that they tried talking to the union about it. Its not like here are negotiations and we are bringing it up all of a sudden. This has been a part of the deal all along, its a huge point in the negotiations the union does not not like but is not going to say a thing about because of the fans turning against them. Get your head out the unions azz and see the real union agenda.

NFL thinks HGH testing in new deal is 'necessary'

What a piece of work the NFL owners are.... They know exactly what's going on now suddenly during negotiations they want HGH testing... Nonsense to me. What's next, the owners pulling a list of players with past positive drug tests out of their @sses? This is complete foolishness.
