Flacco wants extension now: 'I deserve it'

Joe Flacco's in a pretty good situation, as the Ravens always have a strong defense, they've got a good running game, and they seem willing to go out and get him weapons in the receiving game. But, man, things are tense around Baltimore this offseason, and Flacco's recent comments about wanting an extension now -- rather than after 2011 -- shouldn't help much.

"I think I've established myself," Flacco told Jamison Henley of the Baltimore Sun during a Japanese relief charity event hosted by Haruki Nakamura on Saturday. "If you're not confident with who I am, I'm not sure what a year is going to make."

Flacco had similarly strong words for the Ravens when they decided to let his quarterback coach Jim Zorn go after the 2010 season, and now there's more reason to suspect that there's a bit of discord among the people in charge of running the Ravens' offense.

"Ideally for me, I would like to do something as soon as possible because I feel like I deserve it," Flacco said. "If you don’t feel like I'm going to be your quarterback for the next 10 years, what's one year going to make. I don't know what the deal is. We'll have to let this play out and see."

All of that speculation is completely pointless if Flacco can progress in 2011, his fourth year with the club.

"I would feel that after three years, you can make a decision on whether you want me to be your future quarterback or whether you don't. It's your decision," Flacco said. "I wish and hope they would do what they want me to do, which is stay here. Obviously, I want to stay here no matter what. I would want them to do something as early as possible."

Of course, the Ravens decide to "pull an Andy Reid" and draft a quarterback early in the upcoming NFL Draft. If they do that, there's plenty of questions about Flacco's future with the franchise that will be asked.

And though there's no real indication that the Ravens are interested in making such a move, their unwillingness to commit to Flacco until after the 2011 season gives everyone -- including Flacco -- reason to pause.

I wonder if the ravens could put a clause in his new contract that forces him to shave his unibrow or maybe a bonus if he can keep it nice and trimmed throughout the season

I don't see him as a very intelligent guy.  When you watch his interviews he seems a little slow and socially retarded.  I'm sure he's really book smart which translates into knowing the plays which is a must by quarterbacks, but that's not enough to be a great qb, I think being a slow thinker is what makes him a very average qb and leads him to get sacked a lot and make stupid plays on a regular basis.

Just like the Baltimore fans deserve to see you with out a unibrow.

Flacco wants extension now: 'I deserve it'

I think he will get his extension between now and when the season starts. Flacco is out best option at the moment, and he has been good for the most part; he gets better every year. Sure, he made a few mistakes last year, but I'm sure he has learned from them. He has what it takes to take us deep into the playoffs for a 4th straight year, heck, maybe even win us a superbowl in the next three.

Lets see far he gets getting his extension NOW. No one can negotiate any contracts, why would he come out with a comment at this time? Does he want to threaten the team before the draft? That doesn't seem like a prudent move. While he is likely considered their quarterback into the future, maybe he isn't for sure and has just given them food for thought.

Joe throws some pretty passes but his decision making and field awareness are sorely lacking at times. His ability to sense blind side pressure is virutally nil and he is prone to clutch mistakes such as running out of bounds for a 12-yard loss on a final drive (Steelers game last year in playoffs). He has streaks of brilliance coupled with real head-scratchers. I think one year might actually change his game appreciably, if for no other reason that his problems seem to be of the awareness variety. Once the situational lights come on upstairs, he very well might float up to that upper tier of QBs. Just an armchair QB's opinion, of course.
