Goodell: HGH testing is coming to NFL

Commissioner Roger Goodell told the Baltimore Sun today that the NFL is going to insist that HGH testing be part of the next CBA and that it was discussed in labor negotiation meetings with the NFLPA before the lockout ended all talks.

NFL Labor
“The integrity of the NFL is critical,” Goodell said after he spoke to 700 Baltimore-area high school football players about performance-enhancing drugs (and about how drugs are bad, mmkay). “We have to make sure that we’re doing everything possible to have the best drug program in sports. Making changes to our program is critical. We have done that over the years and we have to do more, including the inclusion of HGH testing.”

Goodell wouldn’t say how the players reacted to that – though they’ve been uninterested in HGH testing in the past because that would require a blood test, rather than simply a urine test – but he also said the NFLPA knows the importance of doing it.

“You always have to modify your testing program to stay ahead of the people who are going to cheat the system,” he said. “We would be naïve to think that people aren’t going to cheat the system. But we have to have the best drug testing program to be able to offset it.”

It’s interesting to ponder how much of a wedge issue that might have been between the owners and the players, because we didn’t really hear anything about it before today. It probably landed somewhere between how to split up the $9 billion and how to split up the $9 billion.

VentiLatte, do you really think the owners care about this?? Give me a break... The owners care about the product on the field and making $$... They don't care how it gets done.. This is strictly a PR move by the NFL Owners

Goodell: HGH testing is coming to NFL

This is an important issue that needs to be considered in the next agreement. I know everyone is focused on the more glamorious $$$ issues. The NFL needs to ensure that this testing gets passed to ensure the safety and equality of its players. These "supplements" can lead to long term damage, couple that with the rough nature of the sport is it really a surprise most players pass away at an early age. Only the cheaters would be opposed to testing. Safety is a key issue!

Anybody that thinks these are not on something is a retard. Sure, some of these guys are genetic freaks but I am willing to bet that 60% or more are on something shady. You get the QBs that just have the strong arm or head for the game and the lineman that are just huge but the other guys I will question all day long. HGH testing will turn Pro ball into Pop Warner for adults.

Goodell: HGH testing is coming to NFL

I think Godell should be less worried about the integrity of the NFL and more focused on seeing that there is an NFL !

I wish it were not so, but HGH has value in this sport. Take HGH away & welcome back the 70's.

Are you ready for that NFL fan?

Good point.  I believe Steve Largeant ( for those of you old enough to remember him) made the NFL hall of fame.  What would he do today?  He wouldn't play in a probowl.... not on his life !!  The guy ran a 5 second 40.......  good luck these days if that's all you can do.
It's not just HGH, the NFL is going to do exactly what you said... they will use this as a bargaining chip.  Something like, "we won't test much for HGH  but no way in hell we provide you benefits for much more then 5 years after you're done playing".... or maybe the owners will agree to extend benefits to 10 years, not test for HGH much but get an 18 game season????
It's all about bargaining........ nobody knows what's gonna happen

marionc, great post.  The players obviously can't ask for medical benefits for life yet say no to HGH testing or testing for any other drug for that matter.   And if they do that they are surely going give in on the owners request for an 18 game season so at least the owners can make an extra 15 percent or so per year to help pay for those lifetime benefits.   Oh wait.....  no they won't.  The players are saying an 18 game season is a deal breaker, want lifetime benefits and the right to take drugs that make them better players but could increase their medical costs after retirement, all out of the owners pocket......  yeah, like that'll happen.
