Earlier this week, Jon Gruden was supposed to speak at the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Clinic put on by Illinois head coach Ron Zook. But the Super Bowl winning ex-Bucs coach had to call and cancel.
Why? The plane Gruden took off out of Tampa International Airport was struck by lightning 20 minutes into the flight.
"All of a sudden, the woman next to me asked, 'Did you hear something?' " Gruden said to Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune.
"I told her I definitely heard a weird noise. You could sense something was up. Then the flight attendant came on the speaker and said we got hit by lightning."
The plane made an emergency landing in Orlando. Gruden drove a rental car back to Tampa and promised Zook he’d speak another time.
No word on whether this ordeal will instill in Gruden a long-term fear of flying (you know, like a certain other former Raiders coach who went into broadcasting.)
