Report: Mallett admits drug use to NFL teams

Apparently, former Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett has had some stunning confessions in the lead-up to the NFL draft. As Pro Football Weekly reports, Mallett has admitted to using drugs to prospective employers.

Yet, he struck a different tone while talking to KRJ radio in Seattle earlier today, when Mallett described why he felt he got a raw deal from NFL.com’s Albert Breer in a previous story that discussed some teams’ concerns about his off-field activities.

Said Mallett (via sportsradiointerviews.com) : “Because Albert [Breer] doesn’t know me. Yeah, Albert doesn’t know me and Albert’s never been around me. Albert doesn’t know what kind of guy I am. That’s why I love these visits, being around the team, so they can see what kind of guy I am and what kind of person I am because all these reports about all this other stuff is mind boggling to me. I don’t know where he gets his information, but to me he got false information.”

Which naturally transitions us into today’s PFW report about Mallett's supposed drug use. One GM told PFW’s Nolan Nawrocki that it was the first time he ever heard a draftee admit that, and a league executive told him that he wouldn’t take Mallett at any point in the draft.

For the record, Breer’s story ran in early January, and the mention of Mallett’s off-field activities was 17 words long.

Report: Mallett admits drug use to NFL teams

I think what is more important to teams here is not the fact that he didn't fail any drug tests in college (administered by whom and how frequent?) but the perception of the admission of use as another error in judgment.  Besides the possibility that the NFL will have a target on his back from day one, it is just foolish to say anything that would number one be an unnecessary detriment to himself, and number two immediately cause an image problem for the team that drafts him.  Most likely, the team representative who claimed he would not want to draft Mallett in any round is employed by a team that already has had more than its share of image headaches with players recently, such as Tennessee, Cincinnati or Minnesota.  Funny, all those teams could really use a talent like him.

lets be honest here...half the NFL players smoke weed and the other half take steroids. seriously does any1 really care? all gm's care about is whether they can throw TD passes and win ball games.

Mallet is best in class right now.  Better than Gabbert and better than Newton, for sure.  I am making my claim now so I can brag about it in 3 years!

But I'm guessing you were cool with the guy who did coke and dodged questions about it.  The current president has admitted to trying coke.  I think marijuana is pretty much assumed.

Face it.  Having tried a drug in the past doesn't mean a whole lot when it comes to character.  It speaks more to your environment and your willingness to try it.  You have to look deeper to see if the person has a makeup where that's a problem.  And even then it's not clear.

Let's see.  Would you rather take a chance on a college QB who allegedly may have admitted privately to using an unnamed recreational drug, or another college QB high draft prospect who got in trouble for possessing a stolen computer?  Or would you just attribute both incidents to the foolishness of youth?

Boomer, it's also probable that 99.9% of the white players in the nba, and nfl all smoke pot. Let's not make this a racial thing,
