Giants-Redskins to play on 9/11 in Landover?

Washington will open with New York on Sept. 11 (US Presswire). Posted by Will Brinson

On Monday, once it was confirmed that the NFL would release its schedule Tuesday at 7:00 PM, a rumor that the Jets and Giants would open the season on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 began to circulate.

However the reports coming from up north it appears only one New York team will open up at home. Mike Garafolo of the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports that Giants and Redskins will open the season on 9/11 in Washington, while Manish Mehta of the New York Post reports that the Jets and Cowboys will open the season in the New Meadowlands on the same day, during Sunday Night Football.

Garafolo points out, correctly, that the former matchup would be a fantastic way of commemorating both New York and Washington on the 10-year anniversary of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks. (It also, conveniently, pits two divisional rivals against one another.)

The Jets/Cowboys game lacks any sort of double-commeroration, but needless to say, it would be a ratings bonanza, because it's a) in New York on the 10-year anniversary of a day that still lingers in the minds and hearts of many a New Yorker, b) it's the Jets and the Cowboys who might be the two most interesting teams in the world NFL, and c) it's Rex Ryan versus Rob Ryan!

Garafolo also adds that the Giants will end up playing the Jets on Christmas Eve, which should do alright on television as well (and kudos to the NFL for finding a game that will be interesting regardless of what holiday it is).

Expect plenty more of these schedule leaks -- Garafolo has what he claims is the full Giants sked on the link above -- as we get closer to the actual release of the schedule.

But for now just marinate -- when you consider that we're impossibly far away from getting this labor deal resolved -- on the fact that if the NFL and NFLPA can't end up coming to an agreement before Week 1 of the season, they'll be the only people in America who are doing their best not to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of 911.

Typical Delusional Cowboys fan. They really believe they are America’s team. I don’t get how a team that has won ONE freaking playoff game in 16 years is America’s team.
You mean compared to the Redskins who have been irrelevant even longer?  Tell me something moron, since your last SB victory exactly how many winning seasons have the Skins managed to put out?  I think it's like 5.  That averages out to around one every 4 years.  Good job!

They are all fools, the media that is (Celebrate? I think you mean commemorate ) A bunch of clowns ! They can't wait one day to know for sure????? Who knows if there will even be any games played week one. All this hype just for a schedule. Prime example of why sports in general is going in the crapper. Is Obama running professional sports too ? Sports in following the same path of this Country. They both are in need of an enema. And talk abot Washinton ;the White House needs a new occupant!

celebrate the 10-year anniversary of 911.
Celebrate? I think you mean commemorate. I don't anticipate very many Americans celebrating such an anniversary.

@ GoRomoGo... 1st) I hope Romo stays in big Dallas... they will never win anything w/ that halfasser... 2nd) I think it was just a miswording on his part.  Attacks would be a better word, and there was a bombing at the WTC.. just in 93.. I think its just a bad wording incident.
