It’s either going to be QB Cam Newton, DT Marcell Dareus, CB Patrick Peterson and WR A.J. Green. One member of that quartet, according to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, will be the Panthers’ No. 1 pick Thursday night.*

Like I wrote earlier this evening, Newton is the most likely to hear his name called first (his advisor Warren Moon thinks so anyway), but Green also could make sense, especially if Panthers WR Steve Smith keeps his locker cleaned out and doesn’t want to return to Carolina.

For the record: in their mock drafts, Rob Rang and Chad Reuter had the Panthers taking Newton, the Broncos taking Dareus at No. 2 and the Bengals grabbing Green at No. 4. Rang has Peterson going to the Browns at No. 6, and Reuter has him going to the 49ers at No. 7.

*Isn't a little hard to fathom that, less than 24 hours before the NFL draft, the Panthers STILL don't know who they're going to take and that they've ONLY narrowed it down to four players? That, for me, is rather hard to believe.

There is so much hype heaped on these guys it's ridiculous...recall the Vince Young/Reggie Bush and ahem Mario Williams debate....who's the best player there?  Easily Williams.  People are so quick to forget that Locker was considered a #1 pick at one time too.  At best Newton is the next Vince Young and at worst he is a cross between Akili Smith and JaMarcus Russell and the similarities with Russell extend to football experience too.

If the Panthers are lookin for a guy to step in and play right away, it's Gabbert they should take. and they can dink and dunk it up and down the field all day long...Newton will need to sit at the very least for 1-2 years before he can even take a snap and Mallet to me looks like he has the skillset, but he has meathead/Ryan Leaf written all over him.

Personally , I like Locker or Ponder as the best of the bunch, but only time  will tell.

You dont need to be a genius to play QB but work ethic, common sense and most all, THE HEART TO WANT TO BE THE BEST are just some things that the great ones have! CAM, i doubt it!

There is no way they are going to pass on Cam. It sounds like smoke signals to me.

how about two years playing on two different levels and two national championships. maybe his o-coordinator had nothining negative to say because he led them to an undefeated season? why is it thatnone of these things seem to matter? some people just think he can't handle the job? i'm a university of missouri fan and as good a gabbert wwas for the school he never won a meaningful game for us but now he has a greater potential than the player of the year? i don't get it, and never will.

And having said all that I have I don't think Newton should go 1. Panthers have Clausen. And Pike, right? I would agree with anyone that says the Panthers have more concerns/needs than QB.

Good luck to you, Cam.

The KLM gentlemen went on this whole thing about Sam Bradford....yep, a ton of people thought he would be a bust. Not to mention fragile. I'm glad they were wrong; it was refreshing to see a kid go out there and be a leader.

Let's be honest though, being a QB does NOT mean you have to be a genius or have 'football smarts'. Terry Bradshaw was notoriously dumb. We've seen all sorts of 'geniuses' play football that are somehow able to remember complex plays and play calls. Questioning his intelligence really just comes across...well, as needless.

Clearly, Cam has a lot to learn. But next Mike Vick on the field...Vick's won a lot of games, and once he got his head from out of his behind, has developed into a great QB that still has speed (but clearly pass first, looking through progessions). Vince Young still has maturing to do but his teams win games. No, really. Check his record. Next JaMarcus Russell? I hope not. Both Newton and Russell had a championship pedigree but I think some would agree that Russell's 12-2 title team underachieved some. Newton has been accused of a lot but underachieving isn't one of them. And having said that it's very possible the sun hasn't set on Russell's career (though he undoubtedly has been a bust so far)

Either way, it's been interesting reading the foresight of people that are basing their info on hindsight and half-truths. What I saw from Newton in college was a QB who continued to get better and weathered about as intense of a media storm as any college athlete I've seen and emerge through it as champion. Some have concluded that makes him a liar and a cheat. I conclude that it gives him one heck of a thick skin and mentality to be a good QB in the pros.

But we'll see. Good luck to you, Cam.
