Steve Smith wants to be a Raider or Charger?

It's pretty common knowledge that Steve Smith wants out of Carolina. Or, at least, since he refuses to talk about his situation, so it's common knowledge that Smith is doing everything -- including cleaning out his locker and attempting to sell his Charlotte-area home -- to indicate that he wants out.

But where could he go? Well, Chuck Carroll of reports that Smith is interested in going to either the Raiders or the Chargers next season.

Smith is a native of Lynwood, California, so if the report is true, it makes sense from the perspective of Smith, 31, wanting to get closer to home as he wraps up his career.

The actual part of trading him is tricky, of course. First, there has to be a new Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or league rules in place. Right now, that seems kind of far off.

Secondly, um, Oakland? Because, they have, um, a quarterback? I kid ... kind of. Hue Jackson's an offensive guy, he'd know how to utilize Smith, and Jason Campbell's at least going to have more success than Jimmy Clausen in 2011. (Or, at the very least, you can definitely make that argument and not get anyone fighting you on it.)

And finally, could a deal between the two teams work? Oakland would probably make a play -- Smith is FAST and we know how much Al Davis likes SPEED. But would San Diego give up a talented youngster or an early-round pick for Smith when it's already clear that they can operate successfully with low-end wide receivers on the field? I'm not so sure about that.

That being said, Smith doesn't exactly control his destiny in terms of where he'll end up playing in 2011, and you can expect the Panthers to use his value in an effort to try and rebuild on the fly.

Steve Smith wants to be a Raider or Charger?

You would think Smith would want to go to a team that is a legitimate contender for a title. I know any team can win it, but these two teams still seem like there missing major peices to make a legit run at it. The raiders are just starting to become a competetive team and the charges cant seem to get over the hump. With Rivers at QB they certainly have a chance but there definalty missing that something that will get them past the AFC championship hump. Dont get me wrong the Chargers are always right there in the hunt but there missing that x factor. ( and i doubt that x factor is a WR) At his age he has to consider that he is getting towards the end of his career and hopefully he has plenty of money. If he decides to relocate hopefully its not about who is gonna show him the money and its more about getting that elusive ring.

He would like to see him with the Chargers. I think that would help Rivers out alot. Not sure which is closer to Lynwood either, but I think he and the Chargers fans would benifet more on that then Oakland.

Smith is definitely a thug or atleast a thug wannabe, so yeah, send him to Oakland, perfect fit! Meanwhile, Al Davis would probaly give up a 2nd rounder for him!

The Chargers do well enough without guys like Smith but the move would be interesting. Steve Smith was the air attack for the Panthers when they had success in the middle of this decade.

Fellow Steelers fans. Why take shots at some other teams for no reason? The Raiders have certainly had troubles but to come on and take irrelevant jabs at a team is rude. Steelers fell a bit short this year but let's act like we've been there and show class.

As a San Diego Chargers fan I can say I wouldn't mind Steve Smith playing opposite Vincent Jackson, but I would imagine he'll ask for more than Dean Spanos and the Chargers are willing to spend, plus there's that whole 'bad seed' character issue hanging over his head. I doubt AJ Smith will make a play for him. I guess I could see the Raiders trying to sign him, but their focus will likely be on signing a CB, bye-bye Asomugha, and possibly a Safety (Huff) if and when both players become Free Agents.

IMHO Smith is the best WR out there. Unfortunately, his quarterbacks have SUCKED beyond recognition.
