Bernard Hopkins is one of boxing’s all-time greatest fighters (and perhaps the best middleweight in history). But he’s certainly not an effective ambassador for the sport.
Which he proved yet again Tuesday when promoting his May 21 fight against Jean Pascal in which Hopkins will try to become the oldest-ever world champion in any weight class.
For some reason, Hopkins had a hankering to talk about Redskins QB Donovan McNabb, and it wasn’t in very complimentary terms. In fact, this was more of a Rush Limbaugh-style rant.
Hopkins basically said McNabb isn’t a black man in the same way Hopkins is a black man. Or Terrell Owens and Michael Vick are black men, for that matter.
Said Hopkins, via the Phillynews.com: “He’s got a suntan. That’s all.”
As an example, he brought up the Eagles trade of McNabb to Washington.
"Why do you think McNabb felt he was betrayed?” Because McNabb is the guy in the house, while everybody else is on the field,” Hopkins said. “He's the one who got the extra coat. The extra servings. 'You're our boy.’ He thought he was one of them."
Clearly, Hopkins is referring to slavery and plantations and Uncle Tom’s. And it’s not the first time Hopkins has gone off on a racial rant – he also said Joe Calzaghe couldn’t beat him because Calzaghe is a white guy (for the record, Calzaghe won a split decision against Hopkins in 2008).
"McNabb? Great. Skills? Throw the ball? Great,” Hopkins said. “But there was something missing. Vick? He understands. And T.O. - same cloth."
That said, Hopkins said that he WOULD allow McNabb to watch his kids. So, McNabb has that going for him.

He aint got no balls. I'd be ashamed to call myself black if I was him. He should have him 5 or 6 girls at a time.Furthermore I'm tired of his teamplayer bullshit. Rush simply stated that the media/people are more focused on McNabb and want him to do well mainly bc he's a black man. Not what I would have said, but nobody would have batted an eye if a black commentator (like a Barkley)had said the same. Barkley made a "white" comment last night and nobody said a word. Limbaugh didn't think McNabb was that great...that's his opinion, but Hopkins comments are totally out of line..in my opinion.

C'mon Bernard!!The comments are sad. And outrageously over the top. I can't fathom what would make Hopkins make other than sheer stupidity.
McNabb has had to deal with so much junk like this and now he has to listen to a super-boring fighter run his mouth, good grief. So, while Hopkins has his "observations"such as they are, I'll make mine, particularly after watching the Mosley-Pacquiao fight. Black boxers have lost me as a fan-I refuse to pay another dollar to watch a fighter like Mosley run, a fighter like Mayweather duck tough fights and a fighter like Hopkins shuffle,grab, clinch and hold. Black boxers and their refusal to fight the tough fights and when they do, their refusal to engage the opponent have killed most of the excitement in boxing. Hopkins is a shining example of this type of boxer. I miss Diego Corrales, at least when my man fought-whether he won or lost, he fought....hard...valiantly. Can't say that for Hopkins and his crew. The last clique of black fighters that actually fought the big fights and FOUGHT HARD, was the Evander Holyfield/Pernell Whitaker clique and I miss them too. |

I guess if Donovan had 8 kids by 8 different woman he'd make the cut in Bernard's world? Hopkins is an idiot in need of attention. I liked him as a fighter, but he needs to finally retire, and sit his ass down somewhere!
